Help 8ft by 8ft grow tent how many HPS needed

I'm running hps lights and my area Is 8ft by 8ft was just wondering what wattage bulb to use and how many my space is 7ft high plz help :confused::confused:

I have 8 x 600w hps which is the best way to utilize them any ideas there in adjust a wing reflectors with dimmable ballast

I did one grow with the 600w with wings, upgraded to a 42" parabolic reflector.

Much better :weed:

1000 watters would take some serious cooling....

It's a basement project first run in my new house I'm deffo getting LED's next time i'll make the leap put it off for ages heat wasn't a problem last place had really high ceilings if it wasn't for the HPS heat it would be perfect temperature 23 degrees in the dark but it's reaching 31 by the time they reach the end of their 18 hrs I'm currently running 6 at 400w want to turn them up but worried excess heat im on week 3 of veg so will need to heighten them so will try increasing them to 600w then thanks for the advice

23c is hot for a basement.

You basically need a lot of extraction to maintain just a few degrees over ambient.
It needs to go up a chimney or out the house somehow.

You should consider good air cooled hoods.
But if not 4x 600s would be the bare minimum,

Really the wrong wattage lights for the space you've got though.. no way to get ideal with 6 or 8 600s in a 8x8ft

My advice is make it work for a grow or two and thing about a change of equipment.

Your 8 600w hps would cover that space prettywell. I would probably do 3 along each side and 2 in the middle maybe faced perpendicular to the others to even out the coverage. Even the 3 along each side would give good coverage.

Air Cooled Hoods!

I don’t know why people don’t utilize them more often but it’s absolutely worth it. I did basement grows for 12-13 years in locations that were 90 degrees outside in the summer. I never could afford A/C and things definitely got warm in the basement in the summer, but running an air cooled hood allowed me to get most of that heat out of the grow space and into the rest of the basement to mix with the lower ambient temp air. I was also able to keep my light closer to my plants because it stayed cooler and wasn’t burning them. I usually ran my 1k hps only 14-16 inches from my canopy.

I thought about switching to 2 600w lights instead of the 1k a few times for better overall coverage so you have a good starting point.

I simply Can Not Imagine more than four 600w lights in a 8' x 8' space.

This is a par map I got from cocoforcannabis, the red circles represent my plants.

I have to be diligent in training each plant to not occupy more than a 24" x 24" space....

Something else to consider. IF you plan on growing 16 plants in that space, there will be NO room to move.

My four plants are in an adjustable 5' x 5' x 4' high enclosure in a 10' x 10' x 8' high room and it's just enough space to move them around to water, train, etc.

If your going hps I think the umbrella type hoods are good
The best bud grows under the reflector so bigger the reflector the better
Does have some downsides tho

Couple of oscillating fans
I got away with a 5 inch in a 1.2 x 2.4 many moons ago like

You want to use the bulb heat for the leaves what led guys are at with the vpd or whatever .. then you can keep the room cooler to

I used air cooled hoods for over 10 years. There is no lack of heat or specifically IR for the leaves to stay warm. The hoods remove the excess, its not like they air condition the room to a lower temp. In the winter when I did need extra warmth, I just unhooked the ducting and let the air circulate in the room. It still removed the hot spot directly under the light, and allowed me to run the light closer to the canopy.

Some people complain about the small amount of light that diffuses through the glass but that really isn't an issue either. With less heat intensity directly over the canopy you can lower the lights closer to the plants without any issues which then directly increases the amount of light they are getting, so no real loss.


While I do agree that using 8 600s in an 8x8 space would a lot it wouldn't be totally crazy, many people have used 2 600s in a 4x4, at least back in the day. It gave better coverage then a single 1k, and only used a little more wattage.

Really I think the answer to this would be 6 lights, 3 down each side like I mentioned in my first post. That would provide you with excellent canopy coverage, and still about 50 w/sqft to ensure plenty of photons for good strong growth.
