I just got done making a wooden box and and am part carpenter and part JackofallTrades. I chose to handle the door alittle differently, first I used the same board for the frame and as the door jamb. I basicly made a cube out of 2x4 cut in half covered it plywood, cut the door panel out, then installed the same material around the inside of the opening to act as a jab for the door. I then used regular door hinges (cabinet hardware always seems flimsy and more expensive) and mortised them into the jab. I then used the same material to make a box on the back of the panel I cut out and attached the other side of the hinge to it. For a beginner you can probally get away with not mortising the hinge or using one that doesn't require it. Then I lined the material around the inside of the door jamb with 2 1/2 inch wide strip of left over plywood, this gives the door something to rest agianst and a place for you to lightproof the door.

I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

That looks like a good idea pazuzu. I made my cabinet a similar way, 1 x 1 frame skinned with plywood. My doors are like 6.5 feet tall and 18 inches wide. I was worried about the doors warping so someone suggested I make them out of MDF, so I used 3/4 inch. After my experience, I would not recommend MDF. It was hard to work with, you have to edge it with veneer strips, and it is almost impossible to paint. All that and my doors are still warped and leak light.

The key to any good door is starting out with the straightest lumber possible sometimes this takes alittle digging at the lumber yard.
