HELP! First Grow+pics. I am Ventilation Handicapped, any advise on that and lights?!

hey guys, so I am just starting to set up a little soil grow spot in my garage, it is made of 2 mounted patio doors and sliding pieces of wood to enclose the area, surprisingly not much light gets out. I have a simple CFL set up for 4 plants, I'm using 2 42W, 3 23 W CFL's and 1 100w Flood light(threw in randomly). Now I am coming into contact with some money tomorrow(finally~ stupid mail strike) and am buying some more 42w CFL's(Daylight) or trying to find some 100W, I wanted to go with a metal Hyalide lamp, or like a 400-600w hps, but i just am not really the equipment type of guy and cfl seemed so easy to screw into a socket and hang some lights, now particularly how my lights hang, i dont like, and am gonna do something about it, i just do not know what yet, although for now, it should be fine, well that is until i can afford a decent ballast and HPs/Mh Light(s)/Conversion Bulbs. I can extend the area pretty much as much as i want once i get the supplies for walls(not going to half-ass it and let light in) I was thinking a grow tent or something, but then again i would really have to look into that or get someone to explain that to me. What I am working with is a window right in my grow box setup, and now i am not sure if this a good thing, due to space issues on the inside, but it has to do wonders for easy access to co2. So now what I am wondering is for my ventilation air to exchange properly approx 3 times every 5 mins, i need my exhaust hooked up to my duct, which i currently dont have installed, so do i get the duct piping for the garage and set it up to go into the Exhaust and then it will pump it out properly? I have pictures of my garages ventilation holes. Like i still need an intake fan right? or like a 2 way intake/exhaust window fan, cause with a exhaust duct fan, can you still set up an intake in the duct? like a centrifugal fan or a inline duct fan. I have a Nutone QuietTest qt300 300 cfm Bathroom exhaust fan ready to set up on the Joists, and once i get the electrician in to set up my recepticles and a box for more power it will be running. The one problem is the window is tiny, width wise, because it only opens half way, it is approx 13" by 36" and was wondering what i could put it there, I have approx a 500$ budget, what should I do? i've heard of Ozone generators and Co2 generators, co2 tanks with timers and even homemade co2 generators, all i know is fresh air a must in growing. So my main concern in the air circulating and my lights not catching fire or blowing fuses. Does anything with my approach scare you so far? Like the setup, does anything look dangerous? I am getting a thermostat before everything is set up and and timer to make sure everything is perfect. and the duct tubing is just attached to the window and sitting on the light, until i further figure out what to do. I realized a fan blowing air into it does not produce barely any cfm, if any lol. so what i need to really know is, a. how to ventilate my area with the holes for venting and window i have. and do i need hoods or vents for my lights? does it help prevent heating and help cool it easier? i have seen many set ups where the ducts run through and cool the hoods which i find very sick! b.) are my lights okay? 42w=150w CFLs, or should i just go buy hps ballast and mh lights etc, or just keep throwing cfls in? c.) how much cfm do i need for my intake? d.) How much in hydro will this cost me?

Patience would you rather someone who looks at your thread and can't help to give advice anyways...I don't have a proper ventialation system as I grow in a cold basement so I can't really help so I guess I my suggestion to you is to grow up.

your the only one being a asshole brah you could have bumped your thread or asked for help politely and im sure some of us "assholes" would have tried to help. you didnt really ask any questions either you pretty much just explained your setup wich in my opinion your setup sounds fine your cfls sound fine they are exactly what you want for veg and for your ventilation questions i stole this from another thread Contributed by: Smokey D Dope

How do I add ventilation to my grow area?
There are a couple of considerations to observe when planning your ventilation, they’re pretty simple concepts; but they are often overlooked.

· First, remember that warmer air will naturally rise to the top of any container, and that cooler air will naturally settle towards the bottom.
· Also remember that when ventilating any space, the volume (VOLUME, in cubic feet or cubic meters... [L x W x H]) of air that goes IN, also has to come OUT.
· You can’t expect to ventilate a grow space by simply forcing air in, and not providing an exhaust vent.

Since the object is to remove as much warm air as possible, and replace it with cooler air, it will be most efficient to place the exhaust as close to the top of the space as possible, and place the intake as close to the bottom as possible.


Should I place the fan in the exhaust, intake or both?
The fan should be placed in the exhaust, and the intake should be a simple hole (or light trap, if light getting out is a concern).
This type of system is known as an Active Exhaust, Passive Intake System.
Mounting the fan in the exhaust, sucking air out of the room accomplishes a couple of things...

· Since the exhaust is at the top of the area, the fan will suck the hottest air out of the area first.
· The fan is actually lowering the air pressure inside the area. Any incidental pinholes or leaky seams will simply draw air in. If the fan were blowing IN, those pinholes and leaks would allow potentially smelly air OUT.


How big should the passive intake be?
It should be slightly larger than the exhaust. Remember, the volume of air being blown out, will be replaced through the intake. Using a bigger intake hole allows the incoming air to be at a lower velocity (speed), which minimizes mixing up of the air in the area. It will also allow the fan to operate more efficiently.


How big should the fan be?
Fans are rated in either cubic feet (CFM) or cubic meters per minute in North America. In Eurpose, metric fans are rated in m3/hr - cubic metres per hour (m3/hr).

That means a 70CFM fan will move 70 cubic feet of air in one minute.
Your fan should be big enough to move the volume of your area 2 to 3 times every minute. A 70 CFM fan would be adequate for a 35 cubic foot area, and would be optimal for roughly a 23 cubic foot area.

· To figure your area’s cubic volume, multiply (in feet) the length by the width by the height.


What if I have more than one fan? Should I use one to blow air in and one to suck air out?
Not if the object is to provide as much ventilation and cooling as possible.

· If you have two 3-inch diameter fans, and you mount one in the intake, and one in the exhaust, you have a total intake area of one 3-inch hole and a total exhaust area of one 3-inch hole.
· If you use both fans as exhausts, you have TWO 3-inch exhausts and two 3-inch intakes (actually, two 3.3 inch intakes. They should be bigger than the exhausts, remember?).
· Twice as many holes, twice as much airflow.

I too also grow in a basement so ventilation is really not needed as my temps stay around 75 to 80 with lights on and 65 to 70 off and my humidity is always a constant 40 to 45 % your making it harder than it is to grow a little bit o ganja bro if your having that many problems with ventilation than i would suggest a different area to grow. And as for your lights a good place to buy some big lights like I use " TWO 400 watt equivalent 6500k daylight CFLs is 1000bulbs.com. think i paid like 70 bucks for two but as you can see from my plant short and bushy they work great hope this kinda helps may have been a little off subject... good luck bro..
