I have seen people start seedlings in miracle grow soil they bought at walmart. I myself use Fox Farms Light Warrior and Ocean Forrest. I'm sure you'll get plenty of options offered. Good luck

What were the plants that died planted in? It sounds like a humidity prob. Seedlings need constant warmth. Buy a cheap heating pad and set it on low till the sprouts are I rhink 2-3 weeks maybe less. Or you could get a gardening heating one and just plug it in. Hope this helps.

Walmart carries Burpees seeding soil. It has nutes but they are easy on the plants. I'm using a 125 watt dual spectrum CFL a foot above my plants and it works great. Just don't get your lights too close too fast, but watch for stretching too.

There can be a lot of different reasons why your plants died, and we can spend all day trying to guess what they are.

Do you have any pictures to share, that would make diagnosing much easier.
