Help with my dilemna!

So Im growing some plants outside. And i was wondering if i could use plain dirt and just add fertilizers to it cause im broke as can be right now
but i defiantly want to get a grow in this season but cant get my wallet on any soil.
I was thinking maybe throw some gravel and hay into the dirt but should i expect a shitty yeild without good soil?

Myself I got a pick up load of free soil last summer and added about 20 bux worth of composted soil into my garden. Used minimal fertilizer and my plants turned out awesome for a low budget first grow, avatar is a pic of my garden.

you can get 1cft bag of pro mix from home depot for like $2.5 . i wouldnt use the soil usually to compact for roots to grow good.

You can get your soil tested for around $10, plus another $10 to ship it out. A test will tell you exactly what's in your soil and what you need to add, if anything, to properly amend it. But yes, you can grow in soil and if you amend it correctly you can get very big plants. If you can't afford the $20, you can spend $3 for a home soil test kit and do it yourself. It'll give you a rough idea as to how your soil is.

As for soil being to hard.. well yeah if you walk over it every day. Normally you till the earth first then plant. I know lots of people and I've done it myself, where we just grabbed a mattock and dug in 2'-3' and then mix the existing soil with a bag of soil amendment. Of course if you can afford nice potting mix, that's nice, but you can easily go without it. Again it all depends on what nutrients are already in the soil. The sandy part doesn't matter that just affects drainage. I knew a guy who grew plants using the cheapest cat liter he could find, since its really just clay and sand.
