Hi There (Please Help)

Well i would like to start of by saying what a great site this is. I have been smoking for over 15 years but this will be my first attempt at growing.

I have a very basic knowledge of growing and i'm a little confused with a few things so any help will be very handy.

I'm starting my grow from scratch. I'm going to build a 6x6 ft room in my loft. I'm thinking of getting a 600 watt hps light. Would this be ok? or will a 1000 be better?

I'm going to get an extractor and carbon filter and I'm going to channel the vent through the chimney breast as this is blocked off in every room. I'm just a little confused on what power of extractor i need for my room size?

My other question is. Once i have germinated the seeds and potted them what sort of light cycle do they need? Do they go right into the 18 on a 6 off??

I'm sorry if these questions have already been answered. I'm just a complete noob lol.

If your using the 1000w i would go for a 1150 m3hr fan or something bigger.

As for your seeds , once they are germinated they can be put in anything from 16 + hours of light , so its really up to you which lighting schedule you want to go for. 16/8 , 18/6 etc.

I still can't decide on what light to get. Would a 600w be enough for that room size or would a 1000 be better? I'm maybe looking on growing about 6/8 plants at a time.

Can anyone recommend an easy plant to grow for my first attempt? I was looking at White rhino because of the quick grow time and massive yeilds.

I would definitely go with the 1000 for a 6x6 area

What you have to be carefull of is how hot the room gets, i see your down south and in the loft will get very hot in the summer.
I would personally go for 600watt less heat and electricity.
5 inch extractor with carbon filter and oscillating fan.
You could also use a small intake fan.

Ideal is 600w per m2... You will get better results with a 1000w system but a 600w will be much cooler and still yield some good results. Your 6x6 would be (x2) m2's. Here is a tip! Get a GOOD bulb for your sytem and get a reliable sytem. If you get cheap ballasts you could burn your shit down and cheap bulbs suck. Bottom line... Lumatek, NextGen, Xtreme A few you can trust! As far as bulbs, your bulb is VERY important. For vegetive I run (x2) Eiko 105w CFL's (4,100k) http://www.1000bulbs.com/105-Watt-Compact-Fluorescent/
The kelvin range is what you are looking for in CFL's. You want a Blue range bulb for vegetive growth. (4,100k-6,500k) Save some power before going to a HID sytem. You can put a CFL's right on top of the plants as heat is not a prob. Your timer should be set for either (18ON-(6)OFF or (20)ON-(4)OFF or some people like myself run my Vegetive lights (24)ON and can usually get to the 4th node in 3 weeks from seed. This is not natural and many people would suggest at least a (20)ON-(4)OFF schedule to give the plants that dark period a more natural approach. If you are going to Veg w/a HID run a BLUE SPEC light, Hortilux Eye BLUE is the best MH bulb if you ask me. To flower you are going to a yellow spectrum bulb and your lights are going to (12)ON-(12)OFF!! There can be no disruption in this routine through flowering as this will stress your plants and cause them to hermie on you so DO NOT INTERUPT THE DARK PERIOD!!! Run a quality bulb to flower, this is where the magic happens! I STRONGLY suggest a good full spectrum bulb like the Sunmaster Full Spectrum bulb. This will help with stretch. The most important thing with HID's is HEAT. Find a hood that is AIR COOLED and get a duct fan for it!! This will greatly lower your temps. Find a way to bring COOL air in, through your hood and then vented AWAY from your space. Good luck dude...

Does this look ok? I now just need to decide on what to grow for my first time. any ideas???

Also i'm a little confused on this lighting thing. Do i need to be using different bulbs for veg and flowering?

for your first grow i would probly grow an indica because its life cycle is alittle less then a month shorter then sativa's so you got alittle bit less of a chance of deffiecencys and stuff .. i would go big bud or top 44 and also put your seeds on 24/7 for the first 2 weeks then down to 18/6

Alot of guys use floro lights because their cheep and they don`t produce alot of heat.Also when you start to flower.Turn all lights off for 24 hours to jump start the flowering process.I did a real nice grow using 24 inch GE Bright Sticks.Good Luck on your grow.Stay Happy,Healthy,and High....
