Hitting the Bong while installing 64bit Linux

Hey, haven't posted much but ill post this little story, So after trying to keep a Virus ridden hacker infected computer alive and the file integrity maintained I decided to reformat with all my volatile data backed up. So man, I wipe out my bong and shotgun 2 hits to my dome and prepare for a time. After 3 hours of configuring, installing packages and getting my old data back in place I am finally ready to pack a fat bowl again and relax. Switching from a 32bit OS to a 64bit is great. And about Linux, the 64 bit version of any of them(distros) are completely useless right now. If you don't believe me, go look at comparison charts. It seems to actually run hotter and process at same speed. To make it worse, you are going to have to do a LOAD of do-it-yourself drivers and tweaks for applications to work. I did it for a while, and it was interesting finding work-arounds.... But in the end, I ditched 64-bit.

Btw, which distro do you use? I'm a fan of Ubuntu for general use.

Sup, its true that there is little more than the programs that come with the distribution. So far I have everything I need, browser, data storage, Office programs, Skype, Pidgn, Graphics editor and all necessary graphics updates and hardware updates. Its runs great and the update manager made it insanely easy to do. Right now running 64bit Ubuntu 8.04, super fast and slick interface using gnome.

Yeah, for ubuntu I use...
Pidgin for IM
Xchat for IRC
Firefox for browser
VLC for media player
Gnome...default
Envy - Graphics Drivers
OpenOffice.org for All that good stuff

yep, next step is the Dual-Boot windows and linux, unless you do that already....

HEHEHE!!! Dude, what are you talking about? Done anything enterprise level? My Dell 2900 64 bit running RHEL5 64bit smokes anything that I have ever managed before. There is no substitute for 64bit servers, workstations.....ok they are a little behind but they do well also . Especially on high end workstations.

Well.. still, like i said, look at some comparisons first. I have tryed first hand too. 64bit is the future... and so on

I am DEFINITELY not talking about anything beyond PC level 64-bit coding...So no servers, or mainframes, or military inovations.....

And these are only a few tests.... As you can see, a couple games and programs are beginning to be coded correctly

The problem I see and one that really is not addressed is the fact that people try to get 64bit software to work on 32bit hardware and vice versa. While in some instances it can be made to work, but there will be performance sacrifices in the overhead to convert the instructions one way or another. If you stick with 32bit software on 32bit hardware and 64bit software on 64 hardware, you will see the machines will run just fine. Trying to make it do something it was not intended to do will only lead to problems.

BTW: your benchmarks are windows, post some for some *NIX machines, like the thread started with. Windows sucks.

weather its 32bit or 64bit its all the same, its all processed in machine language, 0's and 1's. Its all processed in the same fashion. Just utilizes the hardware differently.

I seem to remember an old saying that went along the lines of:
A 32 bit operating system on a 16 bit platform using 8 bit etc etc ..and none of it's worth 2 bits.
