So yes, over watering will produce fruit flys or fungus gnats, well just so happens that I had an infestation recently, which escaped outside the tent which is what led me to this idea. I turned on my lamp in my living room and discovered that my cfl light had about 200 fruit flys dead right below the bulb. You could say a light bulb went off in my head, so naturally I grabbed a power strip, 3 plugin light bulb sockets electrical tape and 3 cfl bulbs to plug up, next day great results in my tent, hundreds of dead fungus gnats. They are attracted to brightly colored objects, and i imagine the heat kills them once they get too close. cfls do give off heat, so it may not work for everyone. im just using the standard 26 watt bulbs 3 to a power strip and just one power strip in a 4x4 tent 600 watt cool tube w 240 cubic inch fan. i run 73-85 consistently.
if youre new to fungus gnats.
get rid of all standing water in your house, or close toilet seat lid make sure shower or tub dries out, even in sink, dirty dishes gotta go, otherwise, well, yeah... youre gonna have issues.
Heres the deal with those little guys, their life cycle if im not mistaken is around 10 days, they make larvae about an inch under the soil and the youngsters hatch and climb out. They need a source of dampness/ water to reproduce. So if you have water stagnant get rid of it, get some cfl lights to hang up near your plants if it doesnt give light burn or heat issues. i use gnatrol, which is active for 72 hours once you mix it. It is important that when using gnatrol, you have to let the soil dry out in between, maybe even dry out a little too much, that means reduce your amount of fluids you give your bitches. Just make sure that your plants arent drooping from a lack of water and the soil dries in between waterings using gnatrol and have an adult fly catcher, yellow strips and cfl combo should work. Saturating your soil will further the problem even using gnatrol, dont do that.
happy hunting !
