Our friends created a homemade reflector and gave one to us for use with a 400w HPS bulb. It was awesome of them to do it, so we naturally took it. Upon closer inspection though, I have my doubts.
First of all, it is cut from thin plate steel. The inside has no material lining it to reflect the light. There is a sheet of plastic on the bottom that seals it, but it looks warped underneath the bulb. The wiring and socket are in place well, and there is a location to attach a fan to it. Thing is, we aren't going to be messing with our ventilation. So do I have something that is worthwhile, or do I just have a steel box that is going to make the room hotter than it needs to be?
