HOT cfl BURN solution question/solution?

has anyone had a problem with thier CFLS burning leaf tips and bleaching bottom leaves?

if so, i understand that pulling back the lights is a simple solution, but does this make the plant grow slower or stretch? I am about 8 inches away from the top of the plant and cant get any closer without burning.

ive got some fans on the situation, but i still cant keep the temp below 85 average. check my gallery for some pics of the boxes i am using.

i have used a small amount of ferts, but my ph's are averaging 5.5, so i dont think it is a nute/fert burn.

suggestions,
thanks

well when the doors are wide open I assume some airflow can get into the closet, the large box fan pulls air into the closet, but there is not really an exhaust, except for the other side of the open closet doors. my gallery pics are of the boxes that the plants are in, and the boxes are in the closet, like a box in a box. when i get home ill post a picture.

A box in a box Doesn't sound like there is to much fresh air. Fresh air is key as important as light. Find a way to vent the air!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I've looked at the pics and looks like you are running two warm white tornados around 20 - 23 watts each. I started out with one 23 watt tornado about 2.5 cm or 1" from the top of my seedling and the first set of leaves were burnt and distorted then I changed to a 45 watt daylight cfl under a big shade, but stilled noticed some very slight burns so have moved it to about 4" away. My baby is still growing nicely but I think the cause of the first burn was more from the type of light the tornado put out rather than the heat because it doesn't seem like there would be enough heat from cfl's to burn anything.

I'm still unsure though and will keep monitering this to see how it goes. Thanks for this post and please keep us informed...

actually, those larger bulbs are the 42 and 45 watters. 42 in the box, and 45 in the closet space. i am gonna find a way to get some ventilation or at least more circulation, like one box fan blowin in and one box fan blowin out. short of cuttin a hole in the ceiling or wall, thats about the best i can do for this grow space. any other suggestions welcome, ill keep you posted on results.

To start find a way to vent the air out. That will suck air in and a fan to blow it around. That should be good in that little space.

I had this problem with the 42 watt cfl burnning one of the fan leafs. My dumb ass for got to check the plant for 3 days, and what you know, plants grow pretty quick.

I have 6 85 watt spiral CFLs and I keep them two iches away from the leaf tips and I never get any burn. are you using tin foil to reflect? that might be the problem,
Peace

shiyat, yeah, i am using foil, but just in one of the areas. that crap was so hard to put in there i thought that i would just keep it in there, even though EVERYONE hates on the foil. the plants that are not burning are the ones that are not under the foil, go figure...

I made some fan replacements, but I am still going to have to make some modifications to accomodate my grow area. for now, i am only using one side of the closet. this was all i could do to prevent the temperature from rising above 85. keeping the temperature down also requires that i leave both closet doors open about four inches on each side, with the box fan blowing out.

another solution i thought of was rigging some venting coil/duct from the A/C vent in the ceiling into the closet to get some cool air to circulate in there. ill post that picture if I can get that to work too.

im starting to think that it is just the general hardiness of the plant that i am growing, and that it might be a little sensitive to light/heat. perhaps as the plants get older they will be better able to withstand, or intake all the light that I am trying to give them... might know more on that in a few weeks as they progress.
