How about an 18/12 light cycle?

Good idea, or Bad?

Would this not produce bigger yields? As the plant would still be getting the needed 12 hours of dark, but would be gaining 6 more hours of light.

A digital 7 day timer would be able to do it. And how not? I'm not going by the standard 24 hour day, I'm saying leave the lights on for 18 hours then shut them off for 12 and repeat.

it would be a nightmare to program a digital timer to do that. I was looking into the wemo to try different time schedules and be able to control from my laptop. Your theory is that you are giving the requisite 12 hours of dark to allow the plants hormones to build up. I would think that if it would be a benefit, it would already have been tried.

Just for thought would it be possible that they would actually be slower to flip from Veg to flower under that condition?

NO it will not. Plants have evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to be most efficient in the use of nutrients, water, and light. You can supplement nutrients, water properly, and try to mimic the sun to produce the best buds possible. Changing the actual hours of light can do nothing but confuse the normal cycles of vegetation and flowering and will result in poor airy buds or perhaps (if genetically inclined) to hermie on you.

And for you defoliators, this also means leaving your leaves on.

I don't see that happening though, I would like input from someone who has actually tried it. We put them on a 12/12 because that's the lowest amount of time you want for darkness so they stay In bloom. That leaves 12 hrs on a normal 24 hr day for them to sit there absorbing light to make food, but what if we increased there light hours by just a few. I don't see how they wouldn't benifit from this.

unless you want to consider your days to be 30 hours long then i don't see how you're going to pull off 18/12 lol.

You had better make sure to keep your local dealer or dispensary on speed dial. Another Noob about to bite the dust by trying to run before he can crawl. Try growing a few plants well a few times, you will find that it takes time to understand this (and any other plant). You are not the first nor the last new grower (and sadly some others) who feel the need to adjust the environment because they "feel like it will help" without a scintilla of research, background, or experience. You will also not be the first or last to defend this type of nonsense or the last to feel the wrath of actual experienced growers, with backgrounds in research and actual degrees in biology and/or botany. Welcome to peer review. :fire:

I do have a few grows down, I heard someone else bring this up and it cought my curiosity so I tried looking it up only to find a bunch of other people who have asked the same thing but haven't gotten any straight answers, just a bunch of negativity from people who believe 24 hrs a day is law! Plants adapted to grow under the sun. So why can't we change the schedule a little bit?

well...I don't think anyone is trying to be negative - you just aren't hearing what you want to so it's coming off negatively...A simple timer can't reverse millions of years of evolution. You might be able to fool the plant into thinking it's a different season - but not a different planet :)

No I'm not, the answer I'm looking for is has anyone tried it? And if so what were your results?
It's not real common so you'll be hard pressed to find someone doing it / experience w/ this. Best bet is to just conduct some trials yourself and see how it fairs...worst case scenario you get a hermie

Right, I'm debating on it because I was gonna get an 8' x 4' text after this harvest, and I've already got 2 1000w. I don't see it being to hard to split the tent and set up a side by side comparison on a bunch of clones of the same strain, say 6 per light with same nuts and everything. Just to see if it effect the yield at all.
