how close is too close

let me try this again. i have a 1000w convertible (mh/hps). i've got 4 sprouts right now (10 seeds). my soil mix is 1pt worm castings, 1pt top soil and 2pts spagnum peat moss. i've got the light at 6' right now and i'm watering the soil about every 2 days, just to keep it damp. how close should the light be??? i dont want to burn those little bastards.

dude put ur hand in front of the light,leave it there for like 30 seconds, it it starts to feel hot, its also too hot for the plants. and for seedlings u wanna go mabe 2 feet distance. dude start the seedlings with something less intense, like floros, or cfls, since u wont waste soo much eletricty and when theyre a little mature u can start the 1000w hps again.

I have to agree do not blast the seedlings with HPS power at the start If so at least ensure 60 -80 cm space and have a fan blowing the air in between top of plants and bulb ..The hand trick is neat and I do this myself .
but more importamt ...Dont overwater the seedlings ...Weed does not need that much water for growing ..
I have learned, dont over water the growing plants ...wait in between for the top soil to go dry !!!!!!

DO NOT water daily ,..Thats for later when the plants flower ./..Then indeed they need a lot of water ...they store it in the leaves and will produce at dark hours buds ...with the stored water in leaves ..At growth they do not need this ...WATCH for mold ..Dont water too much at growth stage .... I disagree, I use whatever light I plan on using from the get go, the plants adjust themselves immediately to the strength of the light and you don't have to worry about burning them trying to get the re-adjusted for the stronger light later on.

The hand trick is the best way, if it's too hot for your hand it's too hot for the plants. If your hand is fine then so will your plants.
