I’d say the same. I don’t think you have left it late.
Clean off the bottom third is what I usually do.
Clean away all the trim, cleanliness=godliness etc.
Fresh mulch underneath. I go for good airflow under plant and fresh sugarcane mulch to keep the moulds and such from the ground in check.
Some net could have been good a bit earlier on.
Could still work a bit of net to support them.
Otherwise ‘get in there’ with some bamboo stakes and electrical tape and set some bracing for the main branches after you’ve cleaned off the bottom third.
