How do you tell males from females? (dumb question - new theory)

Top of the evening to you all

I have another theory that needs an answer. Everyone knows that to tell male from a female you look for the pollen sacks and the other significant but small various signs. But I was told by a fellow grower (and we all can't be right), that if you put the plant/clone into the flowering cycle part way through the veg cycle, that you can then determine your males from your females.

So, your plants have already been in the veg cycle for a month or so. and you want to take out the bad weeds(males). Will it hurt the plants any to temporarily switch their light cycle to a 12/12 flowering cycle and back to the veg cycle? && the bigger question. Will it help you determine the males from the females any fast or better?

Please help! This is important to our 'operation' lol. Thank you :peace:

You could do that if you wanted but it wastes time. Unless space is a problem, I'd just wait until you're ready to flower and chuck any males. Once you have known females, you can clone from them 2-3 weeks into flower for next generation.

Also, another thing you can do if you're around enough is to put a black plastic baggie over 1 branch of a vegging plant to give that branch 12 hours of dark. The branch will start to flower while the rest of the plant is in veg.

You can cover one branch while still in veg with an opaque bag or something that blocks out the light to give it 12 hours of darkness, that branch will show sex, is a bitch if you have alot of plants and you have to keep an eye on em cause in an improper enviroment it can cause problems. how we rolled in the old days when we planted seeds outside

or a lot of people also will just take a clone and flower the clone to determine sex.. this way your not stressing the plant as much by screwing around with the light cycles so much doing it the other way..

What the fuck are you talking about wasting time? would you rather wait a week to find out the sex of your plant, or grow it for half a year and then find out you wasted months on it. quit talking bullshit.

but the bag over a branch strategy is good too :D

it wastes time because it takes time for the plant to show the sex after put into flowering, and also reverting back to vegetative state. then you have to veg it some more, then ACTUALLY flower the females completely.

but if u do what uncultivated said, its just however much vegging time you want, then flower. then u pick out the males.

the bag idea sounds good, if u can find a bag that can keep light out effectively. im sure a black trashbag lets some through. maybe use 3 or 4 layers of bags? does this cause humidity problems on that branch?

id try cloning each one, then flower the clone. that way the plants can continue to veg normally during the process. just make sure to keep track of which clone goes with which plant :bigjoint:

It's not bullshit it all depends on your system and your objectives. Me, I only need one or two females and it's not a big deal to flower 3-4 plants for a few days and kill any males. Maybe not the case for others... jus sayin.

The only reason I could see someone doing this would be because of space limitations. I have run into this problem before but my advice to you, if you're having space issues, is to let the plants veg as long as they can and take up as much space as they can, you would be suprised, and then put them into flower and wait a week or so and pull all the males. That way you will not stress your plants AND you might yield a tad less for this flower cycle but you can be sure that you have all of the males gone and don't stress your plants and look forward to the next cycle. I have no real idea based on scientific evidence or anything but I would think that it is possible that your plants will yield more if they are not stressed at the beginning of the flower cycle/the end of veg. It definately will not help. Also can't this type of stress cause your plants to hermie??? (Would appreciate an answer from somebody. Just curious nothing I would ever try). If you are not having issues with space thpough, I can't think of any reason to do what you are talking about. O yeah maybe if you are growing legally and you have too many plants. But other than that, stress your plants out as little as possible mannn!!! Although at the same time it is "weed" and your babies can take a lot. Peace.

Not a new theory though. You can find information and probably journals about this subject on this forum. Good Luck.

I prefer the take a cone and flower it theory for less stress to the actual plant also it saves time not having to reveg it

^^^ Yeah I'm liking that too, take a clone and go 12/12 on it and see what it does then slaughter the parents accordingly. =)
