How does fimming work?

I know the basics of what it does but i have not been able to find the answer to does it still grow nodes after you fim it?

most times FMing will cause the two top nodes to explode just below the removed spot.
Sometimes 1 stronger top will show instead of two, I find that only happens if I remove to much material.
I like using my finger nail clipper so I can cut away the very center while not disturbing the surrounding plant tissue.

I do it a lot.
