How Far and Powerful Should CXB3590s Be From Baby Seedlings?

I have Four CXB3590s 3500k CD bin dimmed all the way down to a total of about 83 watts. My Five seedlings are about a week old now. A couple of them are leaning and im not sure why. At first, i thought they were leaning toward the light but its not centered under the LED so im assuming that's not the case. Is my light too close? Or is it just the sheer weight of the leaves combined with the lankiness of the seedlings? I had the light about 17" away from them. I moved them to about 19" a couple minutes ago as soon as lights went out. Not sure if i should turn my wattage up, move them farther or closer, or what?

I'd say about 3 feet at least. I just throw a 23watt 5000K cfl over them for the first week or 10 days about 6 inches above them at most. One bulb could grow all of those seedlings. You're room looks pretty spiffy.
 
get a large-ish paperclip and open up one end and bend it into a "P" shape but at a right angle. stick the pointy end in the perlite and put the seedling gently inside the "P" part. give em a week. they need little light at that point
 
Outdoors they get +2000umol/s on a clear day from seed....sooooooo. c3 , high dli plant wants light, lots of it.

Your running those cxbs bare, full blast around a foot(12- 14 inches) above should be fine.

Get an oscillating fan on those kiddies, strengthen the stems right up

damnit. i hate when i get answers that are at opposite ends of the spectrum. One person with 6,000+ posts is telling me to crank up the beast and put it closer. The other specializes in COBs and is telling me to just use a small CFL bulb. lol the struggles of a first-time grower:wall:
 
Try cranking it all the way up and putting it 1 foot from your plants and send us a pic in a couple days.
I use cfl because I don't have to fire up my cobs just to get a few seedlings going and seedlings absolutely love a 5000K cfl bulb.
I also live where electrical rates aren't that great. Using my light at full blast for seedlings would be kinda silly.

psuagro knows his stuff. just because i said use 15W doesnt mean you need to put it far away. id have those 4-6" under a shop light fluorescent. strong light builds fat stems and will get them on their way
 
On another note, I've put my lights 1 foot from baby plants and killed them in very short order. They were Vero cobs, perhaps CXB's are baby proof. The heat alone at 1 foot will fry those tiny stems and leaves. Perhaps you can keep the heat down, I couldn't.
 
thanks guys ill be looking into getting 2 23 watt CFLs for my next batch of seedlings ill be running in about a month. I'm thinking I might as well use the COBs for now since the seedlings are already a week old

For the time being, are my plants leaning because they are simply too lanky and weak for the tops? It has nothing to do with lighting does it? The one that leans the most is the one that stretched the most. it was the first to break ground and i didnt have a light on it when it did. i woke up to find it sprouted and stretched. So i put light on it immediately and the others broke ground but didnt stretch as much. I have a honeywell fan on LOW blowing above the canopy (between light and canopy) btw.

Those are next on my list. I'm waiting for a good sale to come on because I'd like to buy a shitload of them, not just for growing. Gonna remove the round part of the bulb though for growing.

holy crap 7 days and your seedlings already had that many leaf sets?! Mine are also 7 days old and they are nowhere near yours size. Lol should i be worried? im running Bodhi's Goji OG. I thought mine were moving along decently but if yours are also 7 days old, mine must be moving along like a snail compared to yours! Is it just the genetics or have i done something to stunt my babies' growth? Sorry, first-time grower here
 
Yep those are the ones. Taking the round part off depends on what brand and it changes. I haven't done it yet but I've heard some actually screw off and some need to be cut off, it's just plastic.

I was lucky all my seeds germinated quick and were growing on day 2. They stayed the same height to this day. This is day 15 and they are under the Vero's now. Almost at week 3 tomorrow so I'll take more pics then but they are much bigger after the past week. Loving the 4000K Vero 29's.Day15.JPG

try to get something with 1600 lm/14W. they seem to be getting better all the time. the plastic cover is glued on you can cut it in a circle with a utility knife, jam a screwdriver in oune side and out the other and pry it off.. theyres ways. check out this thread. bunch of those stack up nice on the 12-slot $25 harbor freight power strips. thsoe outlet-to-socket adapters are $1-2 each at home depot or ebay

dope! so i can build a seedling light for less than 20 bucks!? 10 bucks for two bulbs i think and then 2 bucks for each socket. And i could just get a simple dual-outlet extension cord... or a power strip if i want to space my bulbs about 6 inches apart?

No reflector needed right?
 
naw the leds shine straight down dont sweat reflectors put your money in more $5-$7 bulbs instead
