How Far Away is Too Far - HP Grow Bulb

My Plantmax 1000W MH Conversion Bulb came in the mail today. I plugged it into the system and its running hotter than the Hortilux 1000W HPS Bulb. At least the room is hotter. The ambient temperature outside the tent will fall tonight but the ballast is a magnetic HPS ballast that does not adjust. Can I get some comments and suggestions about this setup? I won't have room for a second hood and second ballast. I've got one flap down on one end and the fan pulling air in from that direction. The top of the highest plant is 28" from the bulb. Is this too close to the bulb? Will I wake up in flames? Thanks for any help!

if your worried about buring your plant leaves.... Use the back of your hand..... If its hot to your hand.... Its hot to your plant

All, thanks for the chart and your personal experiences in controlling heat and the number of foot candles a plant will get at a given distance. I'm at 28" from the MP bulb yesterday. Lets hope it is 20" tomorrow when I wake up. That's dreamin'. Also, a regular 1000W MH bulb won't work in a 1000W HPS magnetic ballast will it?

.
Working on a cloner and some better nutrients. I've ordered a four plant cloning machine, FoxFarm Beastie Bloomz 0-50-30, Earth Juice Elements Cal-n-Mag Plant Food, and Dyna-Gro Gro-008 Grow 7-9-5 Plant Food. I've found a new respect for grass and the people who grow it. Not much is easy about growing. Nothing to take for granted.

I think its vise versa.....hps bulbs wont fire in a mh ballast cause hps ballasts have an igniter...mh will work in a hps same wattage

After much research I've read mj can only use up to 10,000 lumens. Anything more than that its just being wasted! This link has some good info IMO. http://www.angelfire.com/cantina/fourtwenty/yor/yieldcalc.htm

As far as controlling temp besides height of light good air circulation exchange is key. I prefer an active flow vs a passive but that's me. Meaning filter, then fan, then light, then out causing more air to blow on lamp. Also as a note : the straighter the ducting the better n more the cfms flow unrestricted so to speak.

I personally run (2) 1000w n found a portable air conditioner was the ultimate key to controlling the environment.

Finally no a hps ballast cannot run a MH but they do sell a switchable ballast.

only bulbs specially rated as MH for HPS ballast can be used,

not every MH bulb will work in a HPS ballast, they have ot be designed to do it
