How far should my HPS light be from my plant?

i have a cool tube and i have it like 11 or 12 inches away from my plant is that too close or is it just fine???

Put your hand under the tube and if it burns you slightly it'll burn your plants. I have mine about 4-6 inches away with a 6inch fan.
