How important is direct light for seedlings?

Basically if you have tall plants and you place seedlings next to them they will get some light but will mostly get overshadowed. How much of a problem is this?

I mean, it seems to me that at least for the first 2 weeks of a plant's life it doesn't seem to need much light nor have the capacity to profit from much light. Also in nature they would naturally get overshadowed by the older plants and still manage to grow and earn their own space.

I'm asking this because I want to make use of the time it would take my autos to be ready for harvest. And perhaps by the time the older plants are harvested the seedlings will be about 4 weeks old and ready to take their spot directly under the light without getting overshadowed this time.

Seedlings don't need a ton. If she starts stretching or bending toward the light, you will know she needs more. Also, never underestimate the power of a couple normal CFLs and a desk lamp for something this.

i always kept my t5 light somewhat close to new seeding plants otherwise you will get a long stretchy main stock.

Seedlings don't really need much until they start to stretch. I normally pop a seedling with no light, I just let it do it's thing. 2 days later it pops the soil. You should be good, follow growingdad's advice
