how long does the hay smell last

darkdestruction420 is correct. I would like to add that if it doesn't go away after curing, the buds most likely dried much to fast during the drying phase which seems to lock in that taste/smell from the chlorophyl.

Agreed this is where you will need to figure out if you can trim before or after drying a couple of days. If the plants are drying out too fast and not curing this smell out then you should not trim so much next harvest and leave even the root ball when hanging to allow more moisture retention from fan leaves and stems left intact. It does make it a bit more of a pain in the ass to trim but better in long run to ensure nice slow dry before putting in the jars

i always thought that it was actually an amout of time, like say 2 weeks for the chlorophyl to fully break down and thats why people who cure tend to not have that taste because they took more than a few weeks to dry...

It is indeed the amount of time but also like mentioned the amount of time wont matter if dried too fast the smell has locked, this has nothing to do with effect as I have smoked plenty of either hay or no smell at all weed which has given nice bong effect anyway. I wish sometimes all my weed could be smell free and still fuck me up but we all enjoy that great smell and taste especially when its before I even break up a nugg. IF not dried in less than 4-5 days your probably good to go but if your trimmed buds are looking like they are dry enough to hit the jars early in like 2-3 days and need to be layed back out the next morning as they are moist as shit in the jars from pulling the moisture out of stems and middle of buds, early in cure they are smokable yes but dont even crumble right and ball up in middle instead of nice dense smokable nugg where it all breaks up nicely. Mine taste waaaaay better after 4-5 weeks my problem is its normally smoked by then lol and I am waiting for next batch in the oven, the jars are not just drying but controlling the end part by locking humidity levels in air tight jar its impossible for it to dry any further until you burp the jar

forgot to even mention the fact that most people cut early and the smell wasnt at full potential anyway. The last two weeks is what really brings out the flavor as it gives all it has at the end not when it has a week or two left.
