how long should roots be on a clone b4 its ready to transplant?

ok.. i just finally had my first sucess with cloning.. i did it the easiest way i found.. i just cut a few branches below a node, placed it in rooting hormone, and put it in a cup with a little more hormone added in with the water..
i made this crappy "lid" for the cup out of aluminum foil as the sample one that i was copying had used saran wrap, but i was having problems with the plastic holding the clones straight up, so i switched over to the foil..
i also scrapped a lil of the stem away like the guy at my hydro store had shown me..
i just placed the cup and clones under a 23 watt cfl in a clamp reflector..
tonight i just noticed some roots finally growing.. they didn't start to grow from the bottom of the 45 cut that i mad, but rather from the node where i scrapped off the stems and leaves...
sorry about the long drawn out thread, but i was just trying to give as much info as possible..
so here are my two ?'s, finally, lol.. how long should i let the roots be before i transplant it into my medium? right now it only has like a few smallish roots.. i would say the longest maybe one half inch or so.
and ? 2 is should i trim the stem up to where the roots are coming out of where the node was, or should i just leave it like it is and not trim it down any?

as soon as it has roots, it should be transferred to your small pot. try using rockwool next time for clones. do everything the same just stick it in the rock wool instead of what you did. cover with a clear cup or dome and mist and water. they generally root in 10 to 14 days.

I agree... use rockwool. You didn't need to scrape at the node either. That's what the 45 degree cut is for, to expose the phylem WHERE YOU WANT ROOTS TO DEVELOPE.
I let the clones stay in the cloner (water, domes, etc) till I see roots starting to protrude from the bottom of the 1 1/2 inch rockwool cubes I use, Then transfer the cube to a netpot with Hydroton and place the netpots under a 400W MH light in a ebb and flow system. They stay there for 3 to 4 weeks, then into the flowering room.

I wait until it has a few nice roots (not tons like that guy with the dreads..?) and then plant directly into my soiless mix. If you don't wait for enough roots the plant drinks from the cube and not the soil. I just had this issue where i couldn't figure out why they were dropping - pulled back some soil and the cube was bone dry and the soil was wet.

Im not sure if your in soil but this is how i clone. This site has tons of cloning guides just choose one and make it work for you:leaf:

Oooh isnt that a pain in the ass. I just ruined a few trays of clones because i didnt let the roots get big enough and did the same shit as you. The soil and plant sucked out all the moisture from the cube, and the roots werent long enough to get into the soil and now im like the ER doctor trying to revive my babies. Very frustrating to say the least.

first time post and complete nube but here is what I did.

I used a plastic bin and wrapped a black bag around it. I used the Olivia to dip the stem and a pinch of roots organic for the root solution and a single hose with a air stone. I am getting roots in 4-7 days and putting to soil in 8-9 days. No rockwool nothing. I live in the Mt. and am far from a hydro store so we do what we can. Before doing it this way I killed several plants either from spongy stem or just plain impatience. I let the tap roots get about a half inch and make sure there are at least 3 prior to soil. I actually got this from this site on how to make a cloner. I would like to thank all of you as I have been reading tons from you guys. I will post a pic a bit later i a new thread.

Do not trim the stem racer.

For the first question, I've successfully planted hundreds of clones where the roots ranged from an inch long to 18" long. You really want them to be at least 2-3 inches though at minimum as I found with shorter roots than that, the plants may wilt and show signs of early deficiency. Only reason I planted with roots so short is I needed to make up a full batch for my perpetual. Now I cut 2x the number of clones I'll need for planting day and pick the best half of the bunch.

sigh. LOL sorry for not noticing. It did seem kind of odd that racerboy hadn't cloned before, but I've been drinking this afternoon so my mental acuity is off.

been doing some trial and error...i cut some clones, dipped them in clonex, and stuck them straight into dirt. first night they seem to be good. Im using Solo cups and keeping them under a humidity dome
