How many buckets for a 5 gallon Rez DWC

For a new setup that is going to be tested with a 240/g pump problem is using 1/2 inch lines that should of been changed to 1 in as the water level in the rez is always low so this next setup will be with the waterfall method and not feeder lines and a ball valve on the water line to slow down the flow to keep the rez at a decent level wanted to know if anyone has used more than 12 buckets in a system all connected to the rez and not connected to another bucket then the rez if you get what I am saying
