How many foot candles of light do I need for my plants?

Anyone have any experience with these light meters? Mine reads 5,000 or 50,000 ( im not sure how to read it) foot candles at plant level with 24" distance between the MH lamp. From what I could gather it seems that is the most plants can utilize, anything more will just dry them up. Comments?

Its a mystery strain. It was really good stuff and it had 6 seeds in the entire oz. Lighting is a 400w MH conversion bulb (38,000 lumens).
