How many plants for my light?

Ok I have a 400 watt MH light for Veg room. I was wondering how big my space can be. How far away can the light be and it still be able to veg properly? how many plants do you think? Also I have a 1000watt hps for flower room. The same questions for this light as well except to flower right?
