how many plants should I grow?

I really was planning on doing 8 plants in 7 gallon smartpots with TLO built soil. I will be using a 8x4 tent. Starting with a 8 bulb 4 foot t5, then to one dimmable 1000w mh(was planning on splitting the tent and only using half at this point), then 2 1000w dimmable Hps. And starting from clones. Can I do more plants? 10-12?

I would think more about fillin your canopy rather than a fixed # of plants. You may have some strains that can fill a 5x5 1000w area with 4 ten gallon Scrooged. Or some strains that may do better sog 10 or 12 plants in 3 or five gallon pots. It's all about planning ahead while your vegging. Perpetual or single harvest grow??

Single harvest at the moment. I don't want to put too many in there. I'm looking at 6 in each 4x4 area. 12 in the whole. Will be using 7 gal smartpots. Hopefully eventually will be a perpetual but not at the moment.

Personally, I think 4 plants per light works real well. I know it varies on plant size, but that seems to fit the space well in my grows.

Like Green Machine said, it's more about filling the canopy than number of plants.

Do you think stickin 6 in a 4x4 is overdoing it? Without using any growing techniques (scorg,dog,supercropping).... how else can I fill out the canapy? Thanx for the help peeps.

In seven gallonpots yes, i think thats too many in a 4x4. Four would be plenty with that size pots. If they were five gallons.id say ya, then six would be fine.

I used to run six under 2 six hundred watters, 7 gallon pots, 4x8......and that canopy was so full it was retarded.....with only six plants in the whole room.

Being that I'm a noob I'm thinking that the less is better approach would be a smarter move. More room for me to move around, better air circ, and a few less plants for me to F up. 8-10 in my 4x8 with 2 1000w will be my max. Thanx for helping out peeps. As usual I appreciate you all. PEACE.

Then you can keep a couple plants for next rounds clones. Or if you are feeling extra ambitious why not start five under 1000. 5 weeks later later the other five under other lamp. That way you could almost harvest every month. And have a constant supply of clones.

I only have one tent at the moment so I think that would be a little difficult.... But I am goin to go for 5 under each light. Thanx green.

I stick 5 or 6 plants under each one of my 1000w HPS in either 7 or 10 gallon containers (strain dependant). I use a light mover though, so my footprint is a little bigger. If you're using a stationary light I'd go with 4 plants under each light.... assuming you're using 7 gal+ containers.

honestly i'd recommend using just two of the 4foot cfls, WAY less energy and heat than a MH, and this is coming from a grower that has used MHs for yrs and yrs... many grows start to finish with JUST a MH, but you'd get a better footprint with those than a single 1000mh
Plus it's like half the wattage.
The thing that a MH will do is get you a little thicker stems which are good for the dual HPS that you'll be using.
NOW..... one thing to consider.... is using that beefy MH for FLOWER, use a HPS annnnnd the MH... the results are remarkable man.
But the yield is smaller...
EDIT.... if energy isn't a concern, then use that MH!

this is good advice, especially if you hate trimming like me...
One of the things I like about having 6 diff strains each harvest, they finish at diff times,I rotate the 18 diff strains I have right now (yea, 18... don't judge me!)

no, that woudl be a clusterfuck... (not that it isn't anyways)
I clone off clones...

Yea, I know I have a problem...
and that number is gonna likely increase with the two strains of Bodhi stuff I have now, I have 12 of those... so I probably will get at least another 3-5 diff phenos from those two, at least...
BUT, I have done some eliminating... the mango kush, tutankhamon, and girl scout cookies are gonna get the axe... figuratively and literally...
Also three of the four purple paralysis phenos are eliminated too.
but I wasn;t counting those towards my 18...
My goal is to get it down to 12 different strains... or maybe eight...
my keepers right now are the blue dream, double dream, gorilla glue4, purple paralysis, anesthesia, and my kali.
The ones I need to decide on are the jack skellington, joe rogan, tangie, cherrypie, querkle, holy smoke, ghost og...
I know there is more than that...
plus I have the bodhis. the pineapple hashplant (so excited for that one), the blue tara, the pink lotus, and the tranquil elephantiser...
haven't popped the blue tara or the pink lotus yet though
crap...I def got a problem it would appear...
OH, I have the sugarpunch, two phenos, and the madjackberry (love that freebie from sannie!)
hmmm... still think I am missing some...

I goin to go the convential route with this grow(t5>1000mh>2000hps also will be using 4 hortilux t5 as supplemental throughtout the grow). I want a baseline with this first grow. Something I can build off and eventually experiement off. I know I will be using more power but I want to see what I can do with it for now.
