hey guys my rhino carbon filter does not have the metal piece sticking out like what you have with other carbon filters where the ducting just goes over it so i don't understand how I am supposed to connect the ducting?

Weird. Maybe it's a manufacturing error?

I don't have a Rhino carbon filter but their website doesn't seem to have any that look like yours. They all have the flange or whatever the part that protrudes is called:

Oh, on another website I found this bit of info about Rhino filters:

To ensure the full lifespan of the Rhino Hobby filters, you must swap the duct flange and bottom plate from one end to the other. This ensures the carbon is used at an equal rate and the lifespan of the filter is increased to its maximum. This is recommended every 8-10 weeks.

Maybe the duct flange is still in the box or is missing from when you bought it?
