Deep water culture
Inthis DIY guide we will show you step by step how to construct a simple Deepwater culture system for 6-12 plants. This type of system is very easy toconstruct even for a beginner.
Materialsneeded:
- Airpump 3+ watts
- 12inch Air stone
- airtubing a few feet will do
- 18gallon tote(Rubbermaid) container with lid, this will be the reservoir
- 6-12 3 inch net pots
- Claypellets growing medium-1.5 liters per net pot
- Rockwoolcubes
- Marker
- Boxcutter
- PowerDrill with ½ drill bit
- Hydroponicnutrients
Firstthing you need to do is figure out where the net pots are going to be positioned.Use a marker to make some 3 inch circles where the net pots are going to go.After this is done start cutting the holes out with a box cutter.
Nowthat this is done set the lid aside and start washing out the tote, preferablywith 5%-10% bleach to 90%-95% water mixture
.Nowdrill a small ½ inch hole at the top of the tote by the handle part, make sureit is close to the top so water won`t escape out. This hole is where the tubingfrom the air pump will go.
Nowmeasure some tubing from where the air pump will be outside the system all theway through the hole you drilled and to the bottom of the tote. Now cut the pieceof tubing and connect one end to the air pump and run through hole and connectair stone to other end and place air stone on bottom of tote.
Nowyou can fill with water. Try to fill well below where you drilled hole, you canadd or subtract water later on if needed. Next add desired nutrients to water, follow the directions that came with the nutrients carefully. *optional, runpump overnight to evaporate chlorine is water source is known to containchlorine.
Nextinstall the net pots to the holes in lid, they should fit nice and snug. Fillthe net pots with clay pellets. After this is done put the lid on the tote andmake sure the bottoms of the net pots are submerged in the nutrient solution.
Irecommend first starting plants in rockwool cubes then transplant into the netpots filled with clay pellets. But your starter medium of choice should befine.
Thatsit; you now have a fully functional deep water culture hydroponic system. I will post more DIY project soon. ILearned how to build this here for anyone wanting to learn more, and they also have a lot more DIY projects for your indoor cultivation needs.
