ok im planning on doing a room grow. how much electricity can i use before it starts to get looked at? how many lights can i get before the infrared cameras can figure out what it is? and besides stupidity and telling people your secret what other kinds of things do i need to look into to make this as unnoticeable as possible? looking to get as much feedback as possible so anything and everything is welcome.

Don't worry just don't try to scam PG&E and pay your bill on time and use a carbon filter for the smell and all should be good.

I wouldn't worry about the electric bill. Do worry about the smell. A sealed room and good ventilation with a carbon filter should do well. Get the exhaust out up high, out the roof if you can. If your not in a medical state I would move to one.

Keep your room VERY clean so you don't have bug problems. If you get "spider mites" in your room you're pretty much fucked.
Don't throw your soil or roots in your trash can. Unless you take it to the curb like an hour before the trash is picked up.
Keep your outside house clean and tidy. (no "contraband" lying around the outside of your house.)
If using an AC, make sure its quiet. Central AC systems with a condenser outside is noisy. <-- my problem as of now.
Some people argue about sealed rooms VS non sealed rooms. Mine is sealed, with intake and exhaust available when i want.
Don't let your humidity get too high in your room or you will run into powdery mildew, Which fucking sucks !!
Don't tell women about your project.

Get a throw away phone.

What do you mean by sealed vs unsealed? I'm planning on running my exhaust through my attic to vent out my roof. Going to use carbon filter of course. But I was planning on using the same a/c unit as my house. But I may need to invest in a window unit for it. But what should I use to seal the entire room?

only thing i have to say is on the electricity usage,and i have worked it out that most houses/house holds can get away with one 400watt light for veg&flower,,the reason for this is that thats the amount of energy increase you would get if say u installed a 8kw + electric shower(2 people having 15 min showers a day would cover most of extra usage) or say you changed from gas to electric cooker, or you done both,its just something to say when power company queries your bill,its still a risky business tho,best of luck!

As for the power company, they will likely never question the bill or investigate if you do not steal the power and pay your bills on time. Some law enforcement agencies are investigating power bills, but who wants to pay some one to hold down a desk and look at power bills all day? As for FLIR, yeah that is a toughie, especially if you are in an area that has a lot of other grow houses. A 2000w grow sounds a lot bigger to me than a 1000w or even 600w. And if you are thinking about commercial large scale grows then I totally suggest not doing it in your own home. If you are planning a 3-4 plant personal use grow 1000w is plenty, even less will do fine.
That being said the one thing that gets more personal use growers busted is their egos. They have to tell SOMEONE what they are up to. And the bigger the nuggies get the more they want to show off. IMHO most people think that a secret is something you tell only 1 person. I feel that for each person you tell your chances of being caught increase by 20%. Tell 5 and you will likely be sporting a nice shiny new orange jump suit. If you just can't stand it and posting anonymous pics isn't enough to control yourself. Find someone you absolutely trust 110%. Someone that will not act like a rat on a sinking ship if they get in dutch with the law. Preferably a deaf, mute if you can find one.

Hahahaha. Yeah i figured out that it has to be a lot of heat for them to figure out wtf it is. And 2k I figured might be something to ask about.
So yes. Probably going to do a 1000watt hps for bloom and a 200 watt cfl for vegg. Was planning on doing 5 in bloom and 5 in vegg. So as long as I keep my mouth shut and don't get stupid I shouldn't have much to worry about?
Odor control is probably the most important part of not getting caught, next to keeping your mouth shut of course! A persistent strong smell will make someone call the police, and the smell is probable cause for them to search. Make sure there's no light leaking from where it shouldn't be. Also do what you can to control noise. For example try suspending the centrifugal fan with bungee cords to cut vibration, and buy a larger size motor/filter combo with a speed controller.

Oh I see you had some concern about heat. FLIR cameras look for heat pumping out of a house in an unusual manner, so be creative so it will never appear that concentrated heat is being removed. Instead try routing the heat back into your living area, so that the heat will evenly be distributed and not appear suspicious.
Another thing comes to mind: never throw anything grow-related in your own garbage. Bags of soil, fertilizer, bulbs, all should be disposed of in some way not traceable to you.
