How/When to count flowering weeks?

Simple question really - most seeds come with a flowering period (7 weeks etc.)

Do you count from flip (12/12) or first show of flowers?
 
I've seen it done both ways on these sites. Seems like home growers are talking flip and big growers are talking flowers.

Personally, I'm going to start counting from flower. Counting from flip means that I usually run 2 weeks longer than the seedbanks say. (I'm in week 10 from flip on an 8 week strain currently).

I think you should split flowering up

Sexying

budding up

ripening

it`s 3 stages and they are all very useful

I either count from the day I move a plant over to flower or from the day I see female flowers start to set in

I guess if a plant takes more than 2 weeks of short days to show sex, well unless it was mega bud when it did grow I would`nt run that strain again
 
As I thought, not straight forward.

Currently finishing a Critical Mass clones from a buddy - he said 7 weeks... Measuring from flip I'm a few days away...

At the end of the day I suppose it's a guide and you harvest when it's ready!

i never flower a plant without preflowers, fully mature. i use mothers from seed, grown and sexed, fully mature. then i take cuttings and root/veg them. then, the switch is the first day of flower, as they are fully mature and have female flowers on every node.

if you flower before the plants are sexually mature, they will continue to veg even in 12/12 until they hit sexual maturity. then, they will flower. so...

if you are flowering a premature plant, your time is not going to be accurate.

if you are flowering a sexually mature plant, the first day after the first dark cycle is day one of flower.

perfectly stated, and i agree, 100%.

i too always wait until my plant is sexually mature before i flower, ie, see preflowers first.
saying that though, like someone else said, the times a breeders gives as to how long their strain will take to flower is a loose guide line at best imo.. too many factors play a role in how long it takes a strain to flower, phenotype being but one small one, and they'll be finished when they're finished.. i like to take note when i start flowering just to give my self an idea of how long they've been flowering, and how long they take, for the next rounds..
lastly, a lot of people think that finished is much different things.. i've seen people say that a plant is ready for chop when it still has a lot of pistils that haven't receded back into the buds, while other people like to wait until they're all gone and the trics are showing a certain percentage of amber or w/e// i've seen people showing pix of bud that they've just chopped and i think to myself, why on earth did you chop them, they look no where near ready.. all personal preferences of course..
 
^^^ what he said. Only reason I keep track is for future reference to plan my grows, other than that they're done when they're done. For this purpose I just count from the flip to 12/12, good enough reference and consistent. I pay no attention to what seed banks say about flowering times, anyone who's grown out enough seeds knows that's just a guideline and can vary from pheno to pheno.

Good way to put it, so a plant is not flowering until it`s got staggered nodes and is showing sex fully ?

Funny how the odd auto seems to sex up by day 4 sometimes, I mean I`m pretty sure I had one showing sex 2 days after pop but it was a long time ago so it may have been 4 days even a week but it was nuts, explains why some autos yield half a Joint, lol
 
It's all a matter of maturity while most plants start to mature after 6 weeks they don't reach maturity until 8 weeks. An extra 2 weeks really pays off! Start counting at the flip with mature plants...
