Getting close to harvest? Should I wait until there are amber trichomes, or can I chop this when it's mostly cloudy?

Can I quick dry a smaller bud to check for doneness? How would I go about that? 200 degrees for 15 minutes or so?

Quickest I have dried bud to test was 24 hrs cut up on newspaper, in a warm area...if it is ready, you will know. Even quick dried, if it's dank it's dank, and will only get better if properly dried/cured.

Thanks FF, I'm going to give it a whirl to see if the high is there, even if the flavor won't be without proper drying and curing.

Tried 150 degrees for 40 minutes. Took a small bud from ~3.5g to 1.5g. Still didn't burn easily, so more drying time or temp needed there.
It seems to work, though. I'm going to give it another day, get my space set up for drying and a better pair of clippers, and harvest my first tree tomorrow

It didn't taste harsh, but it also didn't taste like I was expecting. I was pretty sure I didn't like the unusual floral/fruity flavor until I was able to place it as "mango," and now it's not so weird.
But still a little weird.
I can't wait for it to cure so I can see what it develops into.

Should I take watering into consideration when I harvest? Does it make more sense to let the plant dry out the soil a bit, since the plan is to dry out the whole plant anyway?

It's an autoflower. It is about 84 days from seed.

It still has a little to go i usually wait untill the top sugar leaves have 3/4 amber trichomes that way the rest of the plant is all milky or just starting to yellow

Full disclosure, those trichome photos are of side branch buds and not that big mass in the center of the middle plant here.
The trichs on the big bud are slightly more developed than the sampled ones, but only just. It's really hard to get the microscope stable that far into the center of the branches, so that's the photos we got. In any case, I haven't found ambers on the big bud yet, either.

Yes and no ... the peak thc is milky but the darker or more amber you go gives you a more stoned effect. But i use the above method because if you pick when the top is milky the lower buds will not be as potent so when the top leaves are becoming amber or are mostly yellow or light amber it ensures the lower buds should be at peak ripeness but its all preference just what i do

All good info! I also like a bit of a stoned feeling from my weed. I wasn't disappointed with the high from what I tried, but there wasn't really any "couch lock" feeling. I did forget what I went to the kitchen for twice in a row, though, so it definitely is doing something.
