Hps light + socket adaptor

Does anyone know if you can use a 250W HPS light, and screw it into a Socket Adaptor for a regular light fixture,...if that will turn the light on?

Or is a ballast necessary?

Only asking cuz I saw 250W HPS lights at Menards for around $20, and an adaptor for $7.

Word. That's what I thought.
Wonder why they sell the bulbs, but nothing to light it up with.

Bastards!
Because ballast don’t come shipped with bulbs ballast bulbs cost more easy breakable and have a shelf life, and as High Power Sodium and Metal Halide bulbs fit in any ballast the manufactures would have to supply both (costly) or own crystal balls.

Ya I know they are costly.
That's why I was curious about the adaptor idea.
And if I am going to purchase another ballast,...it will be a 400w or 600w.
