Hi all,

I hope someone can help me, I have a 250w and a 1000w hps lamp and ballast, they arrived today and this is the ceramic holder, I'd like to know if it needs earthed from this wire hanging down or not, I'm assuming not as the ballast is earthed? Any help ASAP that'd be awesome.

Thanks

Is this a normal sound and colour it's a brand new 250w hps I'm not sure it's right as my 1000w doesn't go as orange or make as much sound from the ballast? Any help will be appreciated!

Ok so I think I wasn't clear enough, I'm guessing the buzz is normal for a mag ballast, the colour I'm not so sure on, however with the earth wire on the lamp holder, I am planning on hanging the bulb vertically with no reflector or anything conductive nearby just the wire into the holder and the bulb screwed in hanging in mid air Is this safe? I'm not a complete noob on electrics I just wanted the advice of someone better than me.

Thanks in advance.

there should be a ground lug on the ceramic mogul socket itself.

i've tried the bare bulb hanging. the only thing that scared me was what happens if the bulb explodes? so i went back to aircooled hoods with tempered glass. at least it will be contained.

I'm sure it will be ok as far as exploding goes ( I hope ) thanks for that I'll try and locate a lug on the ceramic, know whether the colour is ok? Thanks again!

color looks a bit off but hid bulbs will have a burn in period. give it a week or so and see if it changes.

no problem! never a bad idea to double-check especially with electricity.

i had an ushio hps that flickered really noticeably. i gave it a week and still the problem. luckily amazon let me return it and got a hortilux instead.

The lower the watt the more orange it will be...the 1000 should look a bit yellow...

Make sure that you use a gfi plug or a power strip with a breaker or surge protector. Try to find a way to ground that also.

Hi thanks again, I'll stop worrying about colour this is the lowest watt hps I've used so that clears that up!

I have it all on a power strip with a surge breaker, can't find a pig for that Earth though.

Maybe if I try and connect a longer earth wire and run it over to a metal sheet on one of the joists above the tent? That should be ok right?

Thanks again!

neither one has a ground lug? let me dig thru my stuff and see how mine was wired.

is there a plug end that goes into the ballast?

Nope it's literally the + & - into the ceramic, no other lugs or bits of metal, the other end goes straight into the ballast it's sealed so I can't see inside? Thanks for having a look at yours for me!

ok. my mogul only has white/black too. attached to my mogul is a round metal housing which had the ground lug. if you don't have a reflector or anything else metal to attach it to, it should be fine to just let it float. the power plug is grounded.

Use open rated lamps. If they break, they don't shatter and scatter all over the place.

One good example of such a lamp is the Philips 860W CDM lamp. Runs on metal halide circuit of magnetic thousand watt ballast ONLY, no digital ballasts. Bare bulb rated, for use in vertical mounting position only (base up or down ok) Makes good flowers!

good to know. i ended up getting a chinese copy of the OG hood with the vertical bulb placement. this is my first grow with it and i like the results so far. and for $120 with free shipping for the hood, was hard to say no.

What kind of lamp do you run in it?
