hr block or turbo tax

Im taking my 1040ez form somewhere else this year. Anyone use these? I know hr block is doing ez forms for free. Trying to decide where to go
 
If you have none of the below:

A real-estate empire in several states
An active derivatives-trading lifestyle
An intimate knowledge of offshore finance
A shell corporation
A university building named for an ancestor
More than one spouse
A place at the apex of a "make money online!" pyramid

h&r block will cost you about 45 bux(fed may be free but state isn't), turbotax online around 60 but they have extras that they recommend, such as the feature that deducts their payment from your refund. this seems like a really nice feature until you tick that checkmark and hit ok and get the dialog box that tells you that will be another 20 bux or so.
 
I always do TurboTax, but I am thinking of going with HRB this year, they have the new inhome agent thingy to compete with TT I guess. I know that TT offers full legal audit protection for like $30, good for you if you are afraid of IRS audit I guess.
 
I'm a Turbo Tax guy.

I actually went into a H&R Block and had my taxes done. The woman hands me the papers to sign and it says I OWE $800+!!! I politely told the woman to go bang her self, and left the store.
Went home and used Turbo Tax, and ended up getting a total RETURN of $1500+!!!
 
can't help but add my .02 :) been doing taxes and full charge payroll accounting for 20 years (actually worked for hrb for a couple years) .... i have used tt for my own taxes for the last 12 yrs. i obviously like the product so i have no hesitation to recommend it. it really all depends on how complicated your return is. you can use a basic edition tt that is free, state is always extra, the fee/direct deposit runs about 35 total with state it's approx 60 bux. the free is for the ez form but you can still do eic/child care without extra fees. hrb is a good choice if you're not as confident with your knowledge of taxes, well worth the extra money to have peace of mind. (and you don't want to miss out on any deductions/credit you may be eligble for)

my personal situation is so simple i don't need more than tt basic, no mortgage, credit pmts, investments, medical bills, retirement....pretty much nothing lol makes it easy to file

one more thing....unless it's really necessary, i would avoid HRB's offer for Rapid Refund....kinda like a short term loan w/ high rate, high fee and you still have to pass a credit check. i never wait longer than 7 days for my direct deposit refund to hit the bank when i use TT. anyway, hope that helps :)
 
and another thing ... the whole in home agent, prolly gonna try to sell you something too (wow i sound so cynical) lol imho if you don't have a complicated return there is NO need for audit protection....if you have nothing to hide from the irs they are actually pretty reasonable, but then they're not likely to select your return if it doesn't have anything to flag it.
 
are people really unable to fill out a 1040ez by themselves?

i mean, i hate to rag on anyone, but there is a reason why it is called a 1040EZ.

send them to me, i will do it all for $20.
 
Typically the libraries and post office have the forms ... library will have the instructions in hardcopy, and I'm pretty sure they're all available online at wellspenditbetterthanyouanyway.gov ...cn
 
i just did my EZ in about 8 minutes while eating fried chicken.

i am getting $405 back :hump:

time to fill out a mock 1040 to see if i can get more back.

I took mine to H&R block when I turned 18. It cost me $220. I got back less than what I paid to have it done. Every year since I've done it myself. Like UB says the 1040EZ really is so easy. The H&R block people are lazy. I found more deductions than they did. The easiest thing to do is download a copy from one of the many places on the internet. Like CN said Libraries will have hard copies for free if you want to go that route.
 
Last year I wet to hr block and the old ass dude doing my 1040ez added an extra digit at the end of my bank account number, and doesn't go through. So I call hr block and I'm like you guys need to call the IRS and fix this! They tell me I have to do it myself and they weren't gonna help me retrieve my money. The money could have gone into some other persons account and I would have been fucked. Luckily it was an invalid account number, and I had to call the IRS, explain the situation, and wait for them to mail me a hard copy of my check. So I hate HR block and wont recommend them to anyone even if it's free! They don't give a fuck about your taxes if you aren't paying for it. And they'll leave you high and dry if they make a mistake.

Ill do my own with turbo tax this year!
 
I don't understand how tax places think they will find you extra money and they always show the dumbasses "they got me an EXTRA $2,000 back!!!!". How retarded are you to completely miss something large enough to alter your taxes by $2,000? You overlooked something MAJOR. I have confidence that there is no way any tax preparer can legally claim more deductions than I can in turbo tax. I don't trade in stocks. I have 1 legit job with taxable income. 1 house. A couple bank accounts. Turbo tax takes you step by step. So easy a caveman can do it.
