Humidifier smells gross

It smells like burning plastic with a hint of caramel... I don't know how to describe it.

I've bought it second hand from a neighbor.. Are they meant to make this smell? Will it effect the plant long term, I only want to use it throughout veg. It keeps the humidity at 70% in my grow tent. BANG ON. Before it was around 30-40%. So it's perfect.

Any idea what's causing the smell?

I have never used a humidifier yet but i would imagine that shit has mold and crap building up over time. I would think you would need to clean it every so often.

I opened it up, and it was barely used, I wouldn't think I would have to clean it. I gave it a quick rinse out though.

It probably needs to be cleaned weekly bro, but i would think the water you use has a huge impact on scent. I wonder if there's a certain pH that will keep scent down.

I' wonder if the machine was malfunctioning in some way. Mold or bio-contaminants usually don't smell like burning plastic.

I dunno man, I was thinking the same thing. I've been looking on other forums and people have complained about the smell too. I guess it's just universal. Still stinks to high hell :spew:

Take some rubbing alcohol and Cotton swab applicator and clean the ultrasonic disk. If the water quality isn't optimal, the disc gets buildup on it. That could contribute to your weird smells

And take a bath :-)

Yeah idk lol, light,water biology and temps probably all play a role when it comes to keeping that thing clean. Think hydro reservoir and how quickly that fucker will slime up if its never maintained.

I've came to the conclusion it's just due to it being new, needs to be worn a little.

my rh was in the low 30's and i grabbed one and got it up to 50's now but no weird smell only been using it for 2 weeks though

previous owners probably put stuff in water to "smell nice" and it didn't. also watch out for the white mineral dust that some ultrasonics put out.
