Hydration Clay Pellets. ..

This is a question for my soil growers. & maybe I'm just stoned & overthinking it, per usual. Lol. Just hear me out. Okay. So I'm knew to this growing thing. I had some issues on my 1st grow. Made it through & now on my 2nd. So I have this beautiful Red Mandarine plant that's a beast now. I'll attach a pic. Anyhoo, I'm using a layer of clay pellets. Why? I dont fucking know.. cuz they looked cool. Okay. So I thought I had these 10 gallon smart pots. And as fast as the Red Man was growing i decided to transplant her to the 10. To my surprise it was not a 10... it was a 15 gallon smart pot. Lol. Why the fuck not. She's Big enough. So I put a layer of Ocean Forrest on bottom. Pretty thick. Then a layer of the Hydration Clay Pellets. Then the rest Ocean Forrest on top. Well. All seems great. But I just checked my run off after feeding some Silica Blast & it's almost at 3 K. ... which is crazy cuz I haven't even gave any nutrients to her in a few weeks. Cuz I figured the Ocean Forrest is pretty hot already.. but the Clay Pellets?? I spaced & did not wash them off before use. Just straight out the bag into new pot. *So I just dumped some more straight out the bad into a bucket & wet them. Then I checked the PPM of that run off & it was kinda high (500)
. But not in the thousands. So my question is do I even need to care about PPM runoff in soil? I dont seem to have any issues right now, but damn. 3 fucking thousand? I was afraid it would affect my PH... which can cause issues. Anyhoo, so has anyone else used these clay pellets & did not wash them off 1st? I used a good amount. Is it something I need to be concerned with? & also what does run off read like with just fresh ocean Forrest? Is it really high?? Guess I might have to test it. Thanks for any feedback concerning high PPM run off with soil grows. -Casey

It is possible you experienced a salt buildup on the clay pellets. I got something similar in a peat-based mix. A good rinse set things straight.

I used HappybFrog. It was great for two months, then ran out of apparent nutrient. I finished that grow as drain to waste. I suggest you prepare for such an event. GH 3-part was my chosen nutrient.

Yes, I think that might be the case. Yet I am still not sure. I'm kicking myself for not rinsing them off 1st. But not they are in there. So I guess I just need to do a few heavy waterings. I just hope it doesnt cause issues.

I love those things. I washed them because they are gritty. I never considered TDSing the runoff.

Yea, I realized how gritty & how much clay dust was attached to them AFTER the fact. Lol. I'm a dummy. I agree, they are cool. Just concerned about my high PPM in runoff now & if it might affect my girl.

I wager that you’ve washed away almost all the problem, if it was the balls.

Be ready for sudden nutrient loss. I read about it also happening in Ocean Forest.
Right on. Well.. as long as the PPM ain't 3 grand next go I'll feel betta. Ha. & yea.. I'll start feeding her after the new (Ocean Forrest) wears off.

SO, I was curious so I went ahead & transplanted a Northern Lights I just started a few weeks ago from a silo cup size to a 2 gallon pot. It was ready anyways. *I opened a brand new bag of Ocean Forrest & used nothing but in the transplant. Then I just watered, straight water ph'd to 6.3. *the runoff was at 1200 PPMs. I guess that's why they say dont start seedlings in it. Or beware. Anyhoo, now my mind is somewhat at ease. Because I used 10 times the amount of Ocean Forrest in the Red Man 15 gallon pot. Plus the clay pellets I did not wash 1st. That's dust runoff was over 500 PPM. So it seems to kind of make since now in my head. I'm just going to keep an eye on her & not add any nutes till the "new" hot soil wears off. Cheers!
