Hydroton & Algae prevention

I read somewhere on this site about covering the pots with paper plates to prevent light exposure on the hydroton to minimize algae growth. I have done this but notice that the hydroton remains moist between feeds which I would think would encourage algae growth. Can someone provide an opinion and recommendation on this subject?

Lack of light will kill the algae.

But I've heard that UV light kills algae. you might wanna try a reptile (UV) bulb shining on the hydroton. Has anyone tried this?

Snails eat algae if you like snails lol

If you're blocking the light the moisture shouldn't be an issue... algae needs both. I use panda plastic till the plants are tall enough to canopy the pots, haven't had any problems...hth
