If they are florescents, an inch or two above the tops.

HID need to be around 18-24" above the tops.

put the back of your hand just above your plant. lower the lights untill the heat is ok for your hand that is fine for the plants and is a good guide for how far the light should be away. be warned check lights everyday as plants grow quite fast

If all you have is a 14 watt CFL your in trouble. You need alot of light, 10Times that amount for 1 plant my friend.

You have lighting issue, Your plant is reaching for light making it very tall and skinny. You need to have the CFL an inch or so off from the plants top. that things gonna be 9 foot and 4 nodes.. lol Put the light closer or get some bigger bulbs

move the light closer to the plant, also if its having trouble standing up attach it to a 'training post' simply put a stick in the ground directly behind your plant (careful not to damage the plants roots when your putting the stick in the ground) and then with string or wire carefully tie your plant to the stick, but dont tie it to tight

thnx guys i lower the lights now they look better they get more nice green and it stop pulling for the light i put a long cfl its still 14 watt but i have 2 14 watt now and here you dont get much hi wattage bulb without sending much heat so i think i might stick with the cfl but as a i say i have them in sun and light to till they get bigger and cant handle the wind we have to much wind now in aruba and i cant use light that give allot of heat cuase aruba normal temp is 80f every day in the knight it get to 70/75 f
