if they poked out of the dirt on 4/12 and want 2 foot plants, when do i 12/12 it?

You can veg it as long as you want. The longer you veg, the bigger the harvest. I usually like to veg until they get about 12 - 16 inches high. How long you veg depends on your lighting, size of your grow area, your time frame, etc... Once you put them on 12/12, they will usually double or more in size as they stretch out. To me, the most important thing would be your lighting. No point in vegging a 24-inch plant if you have a 20-watt cfl as the light would never be able to penetrate far enough into the canopy to be of any benefit to the smaller bud sites. I would suggest vegging your plant according to the type of lighting you have. If you do not have great lighting, then flower them earlier and if you have, a couple of 1000-watt hps on them, then veg longer to harvest a bigger yield.
