Im starting tomorrow !!

I have the seeds started and under a couple florescent tubes (shit I know).
but Im getting at least a 150W metal halide light tomorrow =D..
I have a 4x4 grow area . (stuff has changed since my last thread)
I'm a first timer I appreciate all advice AND will add to your rep.

how much more would a HPS cost ? ive heard those are better ?
should I aim for a 250 W instead ?

(p.s Im using soil , and bagseed to try it out ... but its from lemon skunk ..)

sweet lemon skunk is the shit! hell yea 250 it is lol the bigger the light the more for the plant ending up more bud for you! just make sure youll have proper ventilation!

how many seeds? for a 4x4 i would go with a 600wt hps, and just deal with the flouros in veg. could find a decent 600 for 3-400 duckets with a hood and the whole works.

if you plan on getting one that big you will need to get a cool tube or sum aircooled lighting system theses light give off much heat.

yea i agree, but he'd have super good production with a 600 in a 4x4

what's up man, if you want a good lamp for a reasonable price get it from ebay. I got mine for 150 bucks shipped. it's a 400w HPS and I love it so far, I used it to veg and I'm using it to bud now. it came with a pretty big hood aswell

I dont have much , but Im going to grab whatever I can today to fit my budget ..
however its in a corner in a basement .. so im not sure how Im going to vent it ..
so I'm probably just going to get a 150/250 halide to start .
because I know if I dont , its just going to be one of those projects that never start lol.

would I still need to vent with a 4x4 open area .. I would use fans obviously ..
but would fans be enough ?

dude if you plan on having a decent cooling system then go with the 600 for a couple extra hundo. you will have PHAT bud production compared to that 150/250. plus if you decide to step up your grow room size you won't have to buy a new light.

How big do you want to go?

You can do a small grow of two or three plants and have them veg under those long fluorescent shop lights. Get them to about 12" tall and then switch over to HPS lights for flowering. (HPS is for flowering MH is for vegging fyi) So imo if you are to spend more $$$ on one phase over the other...it makes sense to spend it on the flowering phase. (get a hps and forget about the mh) cool white cfls and cool white fluorescent tubes absolutely will get you through veg np.

You can pull A LOT of weed off a few plants if you do them right.

I went there .. and I was like 20 bucks short for a 400.
he said since is a open area that it wouldnt be much of a problem even for a 600.
Ive heard the whole "aim for a gram per watt" .. does that apply to metal halides ?
which is cooler HPS or MH ? and I plan on using it throughout the whole cycle , is that ok ?

MH is for vegging only. HPS is for flowering only. Buy a hps. Go down in wattage if it'll save ya some dough. You can pull a lot of weed with a 250 watt hps. Hell you can pull a lot of weed with an all cfl grow but that's another subject.

so I should get a 250 HPS ?
I dont want to use the tubs for vegging , they totally arent working.
can I used a 250 MH for vegging then go to a 250 HPS??

Use cool white cfls for vegging then. I'm trying to save you some $$$. You could veg a plant with 2 standard 26 watt cool white cfls. Total? about $6. Just remember to keep the cfls within a 2 - 3 inches of the plant top...you'll be fine. (You can buy .99 cent extension cords, adapters with bulb socket on one end, prongs to plug into cords in the other if you want a cheap way to hang the cfls above your plants)

Also if you look on ebay...you can get TWO 150 watt hps complete systems for $70 each...which comes out to $140. VS. $200 for one 250 watt hps on ebay. I'd go for the two of course to save the money...get a bit more wattage and cover a larger area.

should I just get both , Ive heard ALOT of good stuff about MH.
but if I dont get any imput ill probably just get a HPS ..
or maybe one that I can use both in.

Buy a switchable ballest and you will have both,its not hardly anymore cash but you have to buy two bulbs.........peace

I just started my first grow about a week ago and looked forever for a nice light set up. I found some cheap 400 watt hps on ebay but finally decided to go with a 400 w from htgsupplies.com . If you do a search for them on this site you will hear nothig but good reviews. I got my shipment from half way across the country in 3 days! So far it's worked great! Only costs $140 after shipping which is one of the cheapest you can find. I've also heard they have amazing customer service if anything goes wrong. Should be a good light for the ammount of space you have and if anything you can add on a few cfl if you want some more. I just have a 2 by 5 closet and it's staying cool in their, I have a fan pointed directly at the bulb. Mh get a ton hotter than hps and hps has better color spectrum for flowering, so if you can only get one def just go with the hps which you can use for the entire grow. Any other questions just ask as I've done a ton of research on the topic! Good luck!

hps is cooler to me. but you plan on using which one the whole cycle?

cool tube is a aircooled light cost more but it allows you to get closer with your lights. if recommended hps is best to go with if you just doin one but both is for best results.

if they have them there , ill def. grab that instead.
