In real need of advice

I have been saving for a long time to build an out building with an 8x8 grow room included. The wheels are in motion and my dream is becoming a reality. Work will begin later this week. I am so excited as I won't have to buy my meds anymore, I can produce my own for myself and my sister who has Parkinsons.
I am a complete rookie when it comes to growing. I have enough money to do whatever I want to or need to to be successful. I was leaning towards led lighting. I live in the PNW and really need advice on everything that I will need to be successful. It is a daunting task for someone with no experience. I have been reading and trying to absorb everything I possibly could for the last two months. I need help with a list of items (necessities) I will need to have a successful grow. I know there are a lot knowledgeable people here. If someone would like to help l would be very grateful. Thanks.

LED is only just starting to get good and only some LED lights are valid horticulture lamps so it is bigtime buyer beware. I myself am researching to switch and I have been looking at CXB3590 DIY stuff. Before we can really advise you it is good to know what temps you are dealing with, for example I am on a mountain side somewhere in Northern California and it is cold here 85% of the time so I will not be completely eliminating my HPS lights as I need them for heat. Please understand we need as many details as you can give, of course I advise you to be nonspecific when it comes to personal details similar to my above example but more specific than The Pacific Northwest. ;)

1. What are the environmental temperatures in your area like? Do you deal with humidity over 50 or under 30 often?
2. What type of grow do you want? A) Veg/Flower in one spot, then reset. Or, B) Perpetual. Or possibly, C) Something else?
3. Do you have your heart set on a style of growing?

I recommend as food for thought; Build the 8x8 into a full time flower room and build a simple reflective divider when running half, such as splitting the room into 4x4. Build your veg in a closet indoors and get the plants going as soon as you are close to finishing the flower room. I think a great way to start growing is soil and if you purchase planters with large drainage holes they will work with CoCo also. (Sorry it got loud in here and I lost my train of thought completely, this is getting long winded anyway. I will wait to hear back)

IMO/ your biggest enemy will sneak in when you least expect it, and destroy everything very silently, even smoothly

that being the mold or spores that activate once the condition's are ideal like when the fog is in, and Rh. and temps are 'normal'

I fight back with good ventilation, neem oil from day one, and ducking the entire tree into a warm bath of 10% bleach, wrap the pot in trash bag first ..lol

poke thru my blog: we grow in similar conditions

Don't be afraid to ask your local co-op for how they handle this and vip,, where to get organic soils

good luck

Assuming you want quality over quantity, you got to make some decisions. If your trying to be legal, look up your local guidelines and see what options that leaves you. Some do sqft some do plant count. Or both. That coupled with how you want to grow gives us a jumping off point. Can your building handle the power requirements of several thousand watts? Do you want to have simple daily tasks, or set up an automated system?

LED are a cool idea, if they worked well. Technology is getting better and the price has come down a lot. But not the boat to board just yet.

I would also suggest, since you have control of the construction, you SAFELY run a separate 220 line and breaker box specifically for that one room.Because with 60sqft+ your most likely going to end up with 6-8 thousand watt's in there, Plus AC, and humidity control. If you can, a concrete floor with a DRAIN, would make life so much better. And an out of sight ducting with an integrated charcoal filter would be stealthy.

Simple is your friend. If you have space limits and NO plant count limit, here is one strategy. Section off a veg area, so you can keep mothers and take cuts. Keep your mothers in appropriately sized pots. And your cuts in rooting blocks until you need them. Use lots of Plants fairly close together so they can form an adequately dense canopy by the end of flowering. Sounds like this is close to home for you. So just keep it SIMPLE. Make or buy a trellis, don't let them get way too big in veg, keep them tidy. Defoliate low leaves and branches that form too low and top the crap out of them to help form the canopy. Then basically just Keep an eye on temp and light height. If you don't care about legal this is also the way to go, saves you time and yields more on average for a given area. Either way, enjoy the adventure, and don't expect to have everything turn out on the first go. Then be pleasantly surprised when it works out!

Again, simpler is better. If you have plant count restrictions NOT space limitations that apply to you. Like in some places that call for as few as 6 or 10 plant limit. If that's the case, get those fuckers Beefy. Big ol pots for big ol roots to support, big ol branches to, you guessed it, support BIG OL NUGZ. Expect lots and lots of training, as many tops as you have the patience for, I mean make look like some outdoor FATTYS while keeping in mind your height restrictions. I find it better to Have as many plants as you can, because it takes less time to veg more small plants, than a few behemoths each run. But if you haft to work with what you can, it IS still possible, you just usually end up with fewer pulls each year, and a lower yield each pull. Which IMHO for personal smoke not profit, is a fair compromise for trying to stay legal.

Hope at least one thing helped, good luck.

Rafiki would be more than happy to help you with quantity and quality - while remaining perfectly legal. Where, approximately, in the PNW are ya'?

Easy. Nice footage. Manageable. Fairly minimal equipment required from clone to flower. Could be easily divided at a later date to accommodate clone and veg set-up, while remaining "self-contained". We specialize in this sort of grow.

Yeah its important that you keep it 'open architecture' for your first few grows

able to swap and match on the spur ..its important

Well thanks for the replies. I am 60 miles from Seattle, moderate temps with little to no humidity. I am totally legal and being a patient and a provider I can grow numerous plants. I want to be a dirt farmer and have a local organic garden that I will get my dirt from. I will be going for quality over quantity. I did not think I would do a perpetual grow as a harvest from a grow would hopefully be enough to hold us over. We are not massive consumers and it will only be for the two of us. I have 220 volts there that fed a hot tub that an electrician will be putting into a panel, all for my purpose. The floor will be wood and the room will be well insulated and air tight. Tall ceilings. You guys are great thank you so much. I am going to get quotes for a slab with drains. If it is reasonable I will do concrete.

Good stuff. Fair warning, with dirt comes bugs, and spores. Keep it clean. I had rooms that have never ever had a problem, and others that get bleached and scrubbed and bombed and it's still seemed like a 50/50 crapshoot. Neem was put out there, organic and effective.

Soil drainage is important. Either build wooden trays, that drip into something you can empty or lacker the wood floor up good and PUT IN A FLOOR DRAIN...seriously the one biggest thing I wish I had! Just a big French drain, filled with gravel.

if you do not make a dedicated box, separate breakers are a must. I put in one outlet per light, and have one breaker on every outlet. Just one of those things that's better to have and not need than need...and have your house burn down.

Hey rafiki, cool name, makes me think lion king...but where you from? Cali local? the royal we makes it sound like you do this for a living or something! You too Vostok? Where does this Viking hail from?

Love how this World Wide Web shit is, well, world wide! And still I end up talking with people within 250mi radius of myself...I see the world is shrinking more every day.

As far as physical equipment I will need if you have products you would suggest I could use some guidance in that area. Essential equipment... For an 8x8 room. Ventilation, light suggestions, humidity control and heat control. Testing equipment.. Anything you can think of.
