info on watering

How much water should I put in my plant? The top is starting to look dry. I'm just not sure how much water to add. I'm growing in soil using cfl lights.

What size container, and how big/old is the plant? Usually you will want to wait to water until it is dry down about 2 inches, or if the plants look like they need it. That will vary some depending on the pot size and how big your plant is.

I use Zephyrhills "spring water". PH balanced. I use water at room temp. Keep track of how much and when you water. Use the "is the pot heavy or light" method. Get to know your plants. They'll tell you what they need. Good luck & good growing!

They sell soil humidity testers. $9.99. Test near and far from the plant and at different depths. When soil is drying roots are growing to find the left moisture. Need to get use to the weight of your plant. Remember plant has weight, so as she gets bigger it will weight more. Seen noobs underwater that way.....

They also drink more as they get bigger, and even more once they have bud.
Different grow medium will also take different amounts of water. Do you have any pic's? I'm curious if your plant being dry on the top might be light burn or some other issue. Usually a sign they need water is they will droop. If its gone dry it could be another issue. Are any of the leaves curled up from the edges like rolling similar to a taco by chance?
I'm using some coco mix this time and I was over watering quite a bit in veg.
Seems like maybe coco holds water pretty well, so when I was watering it wouldn't soak it up how I was expecting. My other grows I could water
and it would pool up a bit in the saucers but within a short time the soil would drink up the water that was in the saucer. I haven't seen that happen yet this grow.

Some of the leaves are curled up but it was like that when it was given to me I pretty much brought it back to life and it's growing good I think. The curled up leaves are still there I never cut them. I figured they would fall on their own or something

It was probably heat or light stress from before you got it. That's not to say your lights are not too close though as well. Just be aware of that anyway. The curled leaves might not fall off, they could recover. I recently changed out my hood to a better suited hood for my grow space and for some reason the leaves on one of the top cola's curled and started to change color and look pretty bad once the new hood was in. I don't know for sure what was up with the leaves on that one cola, maybe a hot spot from the new hood, not too sure. I just raised the hood and then lowered it back to the usual height a couple days or so later and gave it some time. The leaves on that one cola recovered for the most part and everything is fine now. All the other leaves were fine through the whole thing. I'm doubting it was a hot spot but I don't know what else it could have been. Seeing how well my leaves recovered I'd like to hope that yours will too. I don't think I've ever removed a leaf that was showing signs of curling giving that taco effect. I always just corrected the light/heat issue. I'd be more concerned about the leaf that you said looked dry. Mine kind of looked a bit dry too. A different shade of green, somewhat more pale I supposed, and a bit shinny and flaky looking. I don't know how else to describe it, but it recovered.

This is how my plant looks now. It's way better thank what it was before. New leaves are growing. Let me know what I can keep doing to make it better. So far all I've been doing is keeping under the light for 16-18 hours and watering it every 4-5 days.

I use a 24-inch bamboo skewer and push it down through the dirt. Remove the skewer and you can tell from the wet dirt on the stick how wet the soil is.

It will be to your advantage to learn how to water by tipping the pots. When the pot is dry go ahead and water slowly until you get run-off (I put a piece of screen material over the top of a 5-gallon pail). Use the skewer every day and notice where the moisture level is on the skewer. When the pot is nearly dry pick it up and tip it until you get an idea of how heavy a dry pot feels. In the future you will be able to gauge moisture by feel. Works for me

Good luck, BigSteve.
