Even if it is springtails aren't they damaging the plant? If there are lots of them and they are all eating on my roots.

Springtails (Collembola) don't eat living plant tissue, they eat microbes and detritus. Some species have a furcula which allows them to 'spring' up into the air, and you may notice them disappear or jump. Not all species are able to do this but they look similar although they come in a variety of sizes and colors. They are very common.

A variety of other harmless or beneficial bugs might reside in your soil. Many verge on being too small to be seen easily unless their numbers are high. Some harmless mites eat dead organic matter and\or microbes, even springtails, the more beneficial ones also eat (potentially harmful) insect eggs and larvae.
