Thats a soil testing probe you have but you could do with a soil test kit to test the soils ph before growing in it and a water ph test kit for testing the ph of your water supply.
is it really needed?

Yes the probe is essential to but only for testing the soils ph after you have fed and watered them.
I use bottled mineral water that shows the ph on the label (7.0) but i used to use my tap water and tested it with a ph water test kit and my tap water is ph 6.5 but i prefer to use bottled water so i dont have to check the waters ph level.

yea i was planning on using distilled water so that meter is good then to test soil ph after watering. i need one for the water and do i need to check the ph of the soil before i use it to then or no? and know any cheap little ph water testers?

What i do is take my probe to my gardening stores and stab it through the bags of TOP SOIL to see what the ph of the soil is. As for water testing ph kits they are real cheap and you can buy them at any pet/fish selling stores (aqurium/pet shops).
This is the one i have and it only cost a few bucks and has the ability to perform at least 50+ tests from the one kit.

I got one, they good but ya have to calibrate every so often, this is same cheaper and wiv calibration kit

is that one good cause i heard to be weary of products from china that are cheap. whats the cheapest that doesn't need calibration?

I would not trust it. Just find a water source you can trust (ph right) and ph your soil with your probe and it will work out fine.

even the expensive ones need calibration, and mine is fine they put nice names on em sometimes,
u can use distilled water to set to ph 7 and its more acurate than a bottle test like this, http://www.amazon.com/pH-Test-Kit-Freshwater-Tests/dp/B000255NAK ya can spend $100 if ya like but IMO these cheap jap PH things work well Ya can add a little garden lime if ya in soil and ya dont have to worry about PH as this acts as a PH buffer to 6.9?
