Gnats don't eat leaves.........they lay eggs in the soil, and the larvae eats the roots.
You got some kind of bug, but it's not caterpillars or gnats.

I'm no bug expert, sorry. I suggest you look under the leaves with a strong magnifying glass to look for bugs.

I looked thru my microscope at 60 and 100x but no bugs to be found on a couple of the worst looking leaves.

Whatever it is probably flies away afterwards.
Beetles is likely with the chomped holes, leafhoppers usually leave smaller holes.
