Is this normal and did I slow down my plant's growth?

Hello guys, 2 quick questions. I just "dipped" my finger into the soil to check how dry it is. The surface of the soil is HARD AS F***. I tried harder and pressured more until I finally poked it and my finger was like 2-3cm inside. I felt something like a string and though it would be some fiber from the soil mix but it was fucking root tail. I ended up pulling it and breaking it. How the fuck was a root so high in the soil? And why is my soil hard as a brick? The other pot was given the same nutes and it's not hard at all.20201226_232944.jpg

Roots should be throughout most of the soil. It would be surprising if you hadn't found one.
I would guess that either the soil is more compressed in this pot, or the roots were holding it together. That's why they use plants to stabilize slopes.
Do you always poke your finger in at the same spot?

By the way, I wouldn't be too worried about breaking a small root or two in a well established plant. It depends on how big and healthy she is, but it shouldn't really slow her down. You may want to start using the weight method to check if you need to water though.

I'm too paranoid and I do both. Lift the pots and poke my finger lol.
