i have 9 plants growing in a 10 inch clay pot. the roots are all intertwined and are massivly coming out the hole at the bottom. i would like to combine some of the goodness of hydro/aero ponics into this traditional miracle grow method i have been using thus far.

i place the clay pot into a resoivoir full of water about 1 inch heigh. the water will have an airtsone percolating to put air in the water so the plant roots use it. i predict this will make the plant more happy, no?
i think this is a good idea, can anyone tell me why not? my fear is that this is stupid and i should just get a bigger pot. but i don't want to use a bigger pot for aesthetics.
