Is This Yellowing Normal During Flowering?

I grew this plant from seed and have no idea of the strain. All i know now is that it is an Sativa as you can tell. It is also taking a really long time to flower. It has already been 5 weeks and could be many many more before harvest.

It is grown under a 400W light, I water everday with 500ml of RO water 6.5pH. The soil drains and drys really fast. There are ant in the soil which i cant get rid of. I noticed they were hiding in the split stem of the plant where there was a bit of a mutation. I have since put petroleum jelly on the stalk to stop them climbing up..

The fertilize i used before was low in Phosphorus ( it was like 20-1-4). When i noticed I switched to the best one i could find with higher P and K at 16-14-12 or something. Thats the best i found at the time without shopping around too much. I have flushed the soil yesterday and gave it a feed of 6.5pH 500ml of the new fert at 0.8 EC. I will be giving them 500ml of this fert once every week.

However, my question is, Is the yellowing of the flowers like this normal? Or is it actually a deficiency?

yellowing during flower isnt normal..no matter what some threads on this forum might say...its needing nitrogen.when it goes into flower as it goes through ts flowering stretch for the first 3-4 weeks, it needs just as much N then as it does during veg to keep up with the fast growth...not budding growth..but overall plant growth.

Im not sure what is causing that but it doesnt look natural. Watering everyday might be part of the problem. I make sure the soil is dry a good couple inches down and that the pot feel light.

Yes yellowing during flowing is totally normal and yes it is because of a deficiency. bloom fertilizers dont have very much N and thats why your leaves turn yellow. Ideally we want our leaves to stay green and healthy all the way up to harvest, so I suggest supplementing some more N for your plant a few times during flowering or when it looks like she needs it. Every strain is different, some need more nitrogen during flowering than others in order to maintain their foliage.

since when is a deficiency normal?i would rather give the plant what it needs and keep it green and healthy then say the yellowing and dying of leaves is normal.as long as you dont start pumping it full of bloom nutes till week 4-5 of flower and feed it a balanced npk ratio until the stretch is over...you wont have any yellowing

I meant normal as in its common/typical for peoples plants to turn yellow in bloom, this exact question has been asked about a million times here on RIU. You know what? Yellowing during late bloom is normal for plants outdoors too. Go plant some cannabis outside this spring and let mother nature take care of it all summer, then go back and check on it in late bloom, your gonna see yellow leaves on your plants and if you look around your gonna see yellowing and dying leaves other plants as well, you'll even notice this phenomenon occurring with trees too . This is totally normal, but is this what we want as cannabis growers? No, of course not. We want to push our plants to grow as perfectly as possible, so therefor we make sure we're giving our plants enough N in flowering to keep foliage from turning yellow.

It's not really a defeciency at the end, its the plant taking everything its stored up from the leaves and putting it into the flowers. You can give them nitrogen at that point and it wont really stop it. So imo its a bit different than a nute availability problem.

I have hit a breakthrough!

i was looking at some trichomes the other day and found a huge white bug doing some wierd little dance inside my bud in a way to provoke me. Well it worked coz i was mad... Some were dead (or sleeping) and some were doing something else (shitting or eating, one of the two). I did some searching and found out they were aphids... I then went back and had a closer look UNDER the leave and yep, there they were... Under all of the yellow leaves.. i didnt even need a microscope.

I got some spray so hopefully that is under control now... need to invest in some ladybugs next time.. apparently they do a good job and completely natural.

Looks like the ants problem brought in the aphids.. or the aphids brought in the ants... Ants apparently eat what the aphids deposit apparently....

So this is why my leaves were turning yellow and dying!!! It took me a while....

We get giant swarms of lady bugs invading every fall were i live and they get in the house soooo bad and they stay all winter. They're such a pain in the ass when you have billions of them, but the great thing is that I never ever even have to think about pests or bug problems with my indoor plants. Ladybugs wont let that happen. I've never once had spider mites, aphids or any other pests on my plants. It would be a very wise idea to get some ladybugs for your garden.

Not really. You would see damage to the leaves but your plants symptoms looks nothing like the damage you would see with bugs eating the plant. I'm 99.99 percent sure they are not the cause of the yellowing during flower. They are still a problem you will need to deal with, but the yellowing is not from them.

yellow leaves towards the end of flower is usually it does depend on the strain too

The plant is using its energy on bud production... not leaf....thats why your flower fert has low n and high P

in soil, you do not water/feed everyday!!! common mistake with new growers. the 6.5 ph is correct though. if your medium is draining/drying fast, you prob. have a plant with a root-mass that has out-grown it's container. so you have an ant infestation? i suggest x-planting into new medium, and a different/larger container.

I'm not getting involved but this looks intresting to me, i see a slight nitrogen deficiency on a few leaves which is ok i suppose although i can't be sure on this occassion that it is a nitrogen deficiency as most leaves look very green, it dose sure look like it but a very very mild one if that. As for the aphids, you sure it ain't thrips cause they sound similar to what you describe and these will damage leaves although you might notice their faeces that they leave behind and looks like clusters of black dots! The most intresting part about these pics is the leaf tips are all burnt on almost every single leaf, hmm is this overdoing it or underdoing it with a particular nute or heat stress or maybe waterng stress? I think if it was me i would start to look at why the leaf tips are burning to get my clues as to what the plant is needing or not needing. Ants don't really hurt your plant much more heard the sap sucking aphids. Finally the plant looks a bit streched, maybe from heat stress or a poor light source so look into that for possible causes, i'd say too hot but i dont know. The bud looks good though and confident you will finish it off.

Have you flushed it lately and checked the PPM/PH of the run-off compared to what you flushed it with? This would give a better idea of what to do. Deficiency isn't always caused by lack of the nutrient in the soil. Need to know what you feed them and whats still left in your soil after you feed them. In my experience sativas can take from 9 to 13 weeks to flower where indica is typically around 8 weeks. Sativas are native to equatorial areas the further you get from the equator the more indica natives Thats why there is such a difference in flowering time.

tip burn/nursery burn means you are feeding a couple hundred ppm too hot. just drop it down a couple notches, and you'll be fine....

i just checked on another plant grown in soil outdoors and it looks substantially healthier than my indoor one. This outdoor plants wasnt fed nutrient solution and has just been kind of neglected. But in a way better condition than mine that has been monitored and fed regularly. The ourdoor one has aphids too but i saw some ladybugs on there eating them too so thats nothing to worry about. The indoor plant has a substantially greater amount of aphids. I cant get rid of them!

My indoor plant is still unhealthy and is not producing as many trichomes compared to what i saw from the outdoor plant. It is definitely stressed and i dont know what to do with it. Trichomes are few, but cloudy.. no amber ones yet but it has been like that for a while now.
The ph of the soils is around 5.5 and 0.8 EC...
There are no huge fan leaves left. The aphids are eating the crap out of it... Should i keep continuing this or chop it ? I will give photos tomorrow.

By the sound of it, you have aphids/root aphids. Root aphids will make your plant look like it has a nutrient deficiency, in this case N. Root aphids will suck nutrients out of the plant via the roots. Root aphids will alos cause the tip of the leaf look burnt and curl back 0468.jpg



Regular aphids will live on the plant ad will be mined by ants because of the honeydew they produce. Check the bottom of your leaves for any shiny specs or black dots. The black dots is the honeydew that has molded.

Both look like ticks. See anything flying that looks like a gnat?

IMO the plant will kill of some of its bottom leaves as it grows bigger because it doesnt need them anymore

Your soil ph should be 6.5-7.0.

so the aphids are in the roots too? im not liking the sounds of this... there are black dots. I peeled one off and it looked like a a shell of some sort. Must have been a casing off a bug :(

For the last four weeks i have been watering with ph6.5 RO water, this was after a flush.... I dont know what is causing the soil to be that low... perhaps crappy potting mix ?

You should check to see if they are thrips or aphids. With the aphids, go with an azamax spray. Dont get your buds though. Not a whole lot you can do this late into flower. Get a vacuum and suck those buggers up. Its hard to tell if you have root aphids, but if you see them crawling on your soil then they probably are. Are they crawling all around your room? See anything that looks like a gnat? How many weeks till harvest? Anyway to get pics?
