It Begins!!!

So my 10 Top 44 seeds are 4-5 days into their germination. 5 are being germed the "wet paper towel" method. And at my gf's suggestion I tried 5 in a plastic "sprouter" which is hard to describe in my current state of mind.

4 out of 5 germed using the towel and 5/5 using the sprouter!

The average sprout is now maybe a 1/4" long. And one has the telltale dual leaves(?) sticking out. Is this a sign I should plant, or do I wait until they are a certain length (like .5-1")?

I stick them in the soil as soon as i see the first signs of a taproot. In a day or so it will pop out and begin vigorous growth. The one seed that has already shed its shell it already searching for light so leave the clover leaves above the soil and it'll grow quickly. Bill Hicks is the man!

Sounds like good advice to me. If they have a root, plant them.

Don't give up on the final seedling. I did 80 the paper towel way and germinated every one.

I've just built and plugged in my FIRST grow room!

I have 4 big 12 1/4" pots under a 400W Metal Halide. (4 plants is my States legal maximum to avoid anything other than a ticket - though I planted more than one seed in each pot : ) I just picked up the light a few hours ago and OMG, it's not what I was expecting! I kept picturing the 75W grow lamps at Target...

I actually planted a few seeds in each pot just to see if they all sprout. Most of them I think were germinated way too long so I'm a little scared I was a day or so late in planting, hopefully not though.

The ballast is bolted to the frame and weighs it down on an empty metal filing cabinet seen on the right. The chain is used as a saftey precaution. I was thinking of using cinderblocks to lower the light way down to the soil - what do you thing?

I would be worried the light might burn those little seedlings. I would raise the light up another foot for atlest the first week. Around 24" from the tops.

4 points: growing more pot, saving space in case some don't sprout / develop, or if some get burned by the light, or if some are identified as male.

The light has been on for a little over 12 hours and has the closet at 93F

After everything I've read I'm sure that is too hot, so I've been opening the door and airing it out by aiming the fan directly out the door -->my room --> basement. However in tropical settings the temp has to be around the mid-90's so I'm wondering if perhaps it will work out, any thoughts on this?

Widow I can move the light up - but I thought the rule was "2" away so the plants don't grow too high / spindly". All of the "seedlings" are already out-of-their-shells and some are 2" of root when I planted them. I was actually expecting someone to tell me to move them closer!

So the seedlings haven't sprouted through the soil yet? What are you going to do when they all sprout? If anything you are going to end up with less yield. One seed, one pot.

Your grow space is way too hot. A way of enabling the plants to take more heat is to increase their Co2 input.

If they haven't sprouted you don't need the light on them yet.

I defer to your good judgement sir, but I must ask: Why one plant per pot? Why can't they share? In nature don't they grow next to eachother sometimes?

I may attempt a homemade Co2 thing because I have little wiggle room when it comes to venting this space.

Think it's a bad move putting more than 1 seeds in pots that big... but we'll have to see how they do

They can share, but it's going to be tight and one plant would probably die to make room for the other. I've heard of people growing a few plants in a grow bag but I wouldn't do it. Per plant you're going to need at least a 10 litre pot, 15 if you can get them, even bigger if you can.

my grow room is set in comfortable conditions so I think home-made Co2 is best for that. In conditions where the temp' is over 86f it's probably best to invest in the stuff they sell in the shop. My grow room never goes above 80f.

Wait till your seeds sprout before turning on the light, you could stick a normal lamp with flourescent bulb in on them for a few days. Then turn on the big light when you think the little babies can handle it.

Like skunk says-wait before you give em the HID light. I fried my young seedlings with my MH when I should of waited a few more days.

I was going to wait to water them in. The soil is very moist out of the bag still and I'm afraid the little sprouts will drown if I pour water in there. Is there a waiting period for this, do I start out slow or give them a good first soak?

- I know the rule of thumb for subsequent waterings, I'm talking about the first one though - I've only used very tiny amount of water since last night when they were planted.

Soak them good for the first watering. I do this when I transplant.

DAY 3
4 big pots. Six 2" sprouts (two pots have a single sprout in them and two other pots have two sprouts each). I have 2 sprouts in one pot. I'm wondering whether to:

1. move them now
2. move them in about 10 days once they are a bit healthier and stronger
3. leave them until a sex can be determined and kill the male...

It's a big decision because any more than 4 plants is a no-no where I live and I don't want to push it for my first grow.

In other news I have solved the ventilation issues by opening a window in my bedroom - keeping the closet (grow room) open and my bedroom door closed and locked. I have moved into my girlfriends room in the other side of the house! The temp is now a cozy 76° : )

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, check back for more pictures once things start looking interesting.

I would say let them grow for another week and then transplant.

DAY 6

I woke up today and saw my gf's cat hopping out of my closet with a shit-eatin' grin on her face. Leapt up to find my sprouts majorly fucked with

3 of my sprouts (including the two that share a pot) were not only the ones that grew the best, fastest, strongest, biggest; but they were also the ones the cat decided to dig around.

I fixed them as best I could, and gave them a little water to try and settle them back into place - I hope they'll be alright

I have two more pots that were not messed with. The sprouts in those pots are growing very slowly compared to the three you see in the pictures. I don't know why, they are all getting the same treatment

Some yellowish coloration around the sprouts has me worried also, but they are so small maybe I'm just being overly paranoid.
