seeds take a lot more than 24 hours to break thru the surface. give it a few days. maybe a week.

light wont make a different until leaves start showing, right now they need lots of moisture in the soil and some time. Give them time. Maybe cover up the heads of the seeds, they should be planted 1/4th an inch underneath soil.

I rather germinate my seeds before putting them soil before. Here is the reason: seeds have already all the nutrients and component for the seed to germinate and your soil which is probably high in Nitrogen might actually compromise the development of the seed. Just put your seeds between 2 layers of cheese cloth or napkin paper in a plate, wet the all thing with distilled water since we only need moisture. Remove excess of water and put the plate somewhere dark (a drawer, a closet). Make sure the cloth/paper is wet but not to the point that seeds are immersed in water or they will drown or rot. Generally the second day or so, the seed will germinate. Grab delicately the seed and insert it into a rooting cube with the little stem going downward. Keep the moisture to +/- 90% and in less that a week you will see the stem and coteidon develop. After a couple week the seedling will be then ready for transplanting in soil.
