Jarring and burping question (includes poll and music)

When curing in jars the:

  • Screw ring is required

  • Screw ring is not required

  • Screw you Jimmy

  • Potato

Results are only viewable after voting.
What I'm asking is the weight of the jar lid (with the rubberized seal) adequate to provide a short-term seal between burpings, or should the threaded ring be used every time?

I seal it down. Tight.

But, I’m using oven roasting bags to cure my harvest, and getting ready to transfer to jars. I like the bags because I have about 2.5oz of flower in the bags, but I only want to put 1oz in jars, so it makes it much easier for me to burp my bags, which I’ve been doing twice a day for about 30 minutes each time, then seal the bags back up.


So now this is my question.

How long do I need to burp my bags? How do I know that I have achieved a proper cure where I don’t need to burp it?

Moisture content. Only way to truly gauge it is with a hygrometer. Toss it into the bags with your buds. Cure range varies, and is preferential.I've read the cure stops in the 52-55% range. I shoot for 62-65%Rh before I leave the jars alone. 65%RH for the jar I smoke out of.

Thanks for the replies, I put a hygrometer in a jar every few days to monitor the progress. I seem to be getting that just setting the the jar lid on is not going to be adequate, I ask because I'm tired of taking the freaking jar lids on and off twice a day.

I thought sitting the inner rubberized part properly on the jar might be adequate to keep a seal between burpings but I guess I'll keep screwing the rings on tight. I may start using turkey bags too so there's not as many jars involved?

Twice a day for the first week or so depending if they're jarred closer to 62 or 65%, but I don't leave a hygrometer in so I don't know if they change during the day. I check about once a week, when I hit 58% I vacuum seal.
 
Leave them in over the course of 24 hrs. You'll get a more stable reading. No ill effects outside of a sticky hydrometer. 58% I see u like your a lol bit more dry when u seal.

That’s why I’m using the turkey bags, so I don’t have to deal with 10 jars.
 
I guess it depends how wet your buds are, and how concerned you are about them potentially drying out. I live in a dry 20-30% average, so that's seems risky to me. I would be would worried about losing terps if there's air exchange happening...... But I vote potato, definitely potato......
 
If you have a lot of jars why not try an experiment letting a plant dry to the point that you can jar and not have to burp every day.
I went from never jarring to jarring and burping everyday. I also found it a pain in the ass so I went back to allowing the bud to dry enough to jar and not worry about burping. In my case letting them dry further before jarring is working well. Maybe it is different for others who let it dry 1st but it works for me.

Thanks for the input, in the old days I used to put it in tupperware and throw it in the fridge till I smoked it or otherwise (had to go in tupperware and then in something else cuz it was real skunk#1)

Now in the few years I've been back everything's jars jars jars!? I'm not complaining mind you I would rather have more jars to open than less LOL but I'm considering turkey bags, I've never used them but I'm listening and reading about and considering trying them

I understand what you're saying and that's pretty much how I used to do it, but now I have a controlled drying chamber where I bring the bud to a controlled 63 - 65% RH in 5 - 7 days depending on density of the bud, then I jar it

I then burp on a regular schedule and it's giving me unbelievable and consistent results, just didn't know if anybody had already looked into the necessity of the locking rings in between burpings

What made me think to ask this besides the pain in the ass the lids are was I noticed a jar here & there there where the ring wasn't on properly and it was basically just sitting on the jar, I tested the humidity and it was no different than if it had been screwed down

No I don't want to risk the air exposure either that's why I'm trying to find out if just sitting the lid on and if they're not bumped is adequate ..and 100% for potato!

Above cob nut suggested leaving it in for 24 hours, I suppose I could just sit a lid on and observe it. I'll give that a shot this weekend and see if rh stays as steady as if it were tightly sealed ?

Yeah give it a try man, let us know how it works out. It might seal, when getting out a nug to smoke I set the lid back on like that to keep air exchange to a minimum while I break it up.... I keep hearing talk lately about terps eating the seal on mason jars? I have no idea about that one.... If you're tired of burping multiple jars, you can always cure in a 5 gallon bucket with a gamma lid. Toss in some boveda packets and you don't even need to burp. Assuming you don't have 20 stains in 20 different jars.

I agree. When I started I jared way too wet. I then bought hygrometers and started experimenting. I let mine dry pretty far. But some strains suck no matter what.

This is what I've settled on..I don't burp everyday. I open the jars once a week for 2-3weeks for air exchange.

I understand, the last batch of boveda packs I got, were not keeping rh at the stated level. I didn't catch it until it was too late and I lost my cure. Pissed me off honestly. And the thing is, they say if the pack is still soft it's good, they were soft! I'm left with ???:wall:
It's the only time I've heard of this happening, I ran it past a few people that use them, nobody knows.
